Evening all. 

 

having spent hours trying to work out the max towing weight for my 2012 2.0L Diesel vRS Octavia Estate, I am still not convinced I know the full answer. 
 

I have the following weights on door plate. 
 

1985kg

3385kg 

 

which I know means the maximum towable is 1400kg (also in the V5) 
 

Does this simply mean I am legally allowed to tow a caravan with MTPLM 1400kg and below? Can I buy a heavier caravan and just make sure I don’t load it full of stuff? I have seen a van which I like and it’s 1466kg. 
 

Next question is what is the 85% recommendation that I read about? 
 

sorry for the noob question but I can’t seem to get it clear in my head.

Hi Will, I suspect that if you were stopped for a weight check (probably unlikely - but possible) the number on the trailer plate will be the one used.

Regarding the 85% recommendation, I think this is a suggested towing weight de-rating of the maximum to give better balance and stability.

NO!! The stated 1_400kg is the maximum tare weight of the loaded trailer.

I find that towing at 1320kg  gives me a stable drive in most conditions, also nose weight of 75kg . Too excede these figures can make towing diffecult at times,
