Many thanks! If we can get the starting reliability up to where it should be, I may even get my wife to drive it on her own ( no problem with the 14 Octavia) At present she's too worried about getting stuck somewhere..

Many thanks to all! 3rd callout finally got a VW engineer who did an exhaustive series of tests.. faulty battery but no leakage & very healthy alternator. New battery fitted (original ran out of guarantee in February) so all back to full features.
