Oil usage

Featured Replies

Hi

We have a Superb Mk11 1.8 4x4 TSI Petrol Estate and it's been using a crazy amount of oil recently (5w 30). So much so, at one point I was filling up the oil every other day (it seems to have settled on about once or twice a week). Someone suggested we get a compression test done at a garage, which we did, and the garage said it was all within range (95 bar I think he said). The garage owner simply said these particular models just use a lot of oil, but there's no obvious leak, which means that it must be seaping through one or more of the rings? Has anyone else had this problem as it's costing a fortune in oil? Any solutions other than to use a slightly thicker oil?

TIA

The EA888, especially the 1.8, has a terrible reputation for drinking oil especially pre 2013. The only cure is to fit the updated pistons. The reason is the low drag ring design which reduces Co2 emissions on paper by about 1 gram per Km but in reality makes them drink oil, but hey, it's "saving the planet"  🐮 💩

OK, that's helpful, thanks. Any rough idea what to would cost to replace pistons at any independent garage?

It is a LOT of work, I would say 3 days for an experienced grease monkey if the head WASN'T rebuilt as well. What is the VIN? Genuine th pistons are £274.20 each but should be available aftermarket. On top of the you would need a chain rebuild set, head gasket set, con rod bearing and a BIG pile of fasteners.
