Rear mounted cheap 2-bicycle carrier

Featured Replies

Hi, I’m looking for an inexpensive bicycle carrier for my 2 grandsons bikes. Has anyone experience of fitting such? I’m concerned the wind deflector may interfere with fitting too straps of some of the cheap genetic ones on the market.

Officially there are only 2 types of bike carrier : roof bars attachment and one that fits on the tow bar.

The tailgate hinges (and the spoiler) are like most modern cars not designed to carry heavy external loads, especially with the wind drag increasing the dynamic loading.

When you say grandsons bikes, I am not sure if you mean kids bikes.  I suspect a couple of these on a strap type one will be ok.  But if you are thinking of hanging 2 or 3 adult bikes from it then not a good idea.

Does your car have roof rails, if so might be sensible to buy a couple of small ratchet straps (the ones about width of a trouser belt) and loop it around the back of each rail.   Something like this

Thanks SurreyJohn, that’s helpful information. I can understand what you’re saying about the wind deflector, it doesn’t feel all that strong. I don’t have either a tow bar or roof rack and as I was only planning occasional carries of their bikes I will not go ahead. They may be a little disappointed but there’s lots of other things we can do! I appreciate you taking the time to reply.
