08 Octavia 1.9tdi engine noise

Featured Replies

Hi all,

So with my great luck, I have a car that I just spent 500€ getting through the NCT to now having a horrible noise coming from the engine.

An hour before the NCT the car started making this noise in the video below.

But went away on the way to the NCT. Thought ok maybe it was nothing.

Nope on the way back from the NCT it sounded horrible.

Not sure what it could be. Car still drives and pulls but is shaking when accelerating.

Noise gets worse the higher you rev.

Thought it could be something on the alternator belt, a bearing or something but when I squeeze the air/boost hoses it feels like it's popping inside.(sounds strange but the best way I can describe it now).

Any help is appreciated

Check the one way clutch on the alternator hasn't seized.

Classic worn out camshaft sound.

Search Youtube for "1.9 tdi bad camshaft".

Sounds like severe cam rattle but with what sounds to me to be a misfire I think one of the valves is not opening, does that engine use finger type rocker cam followers? If so one may be broken or displaced which would be perhaps an easier repair.

Otherwise a very very worn camshaft, I cant imagine why it would have sounded better for a while though.

@yungog

I wouldn't drive it, the engine is making metal.

As for being a DIY job... absolutely, it depends on your capabilities.

Plenty of videos showing you how to do it.

You were right. Camshaft was gone

Got mechanic to swap it out as between work and kids I don't have any spare time!!!

Got a new timing belt fitted. So good for another 100,000km ;)
