Does Octavia 2 burn oil?

Featured Replies

I have a 2005 octavia 2, with 44,000kms, two services (16 & 32,000K) and I needed to fill with 2 litres of oil. Is this the norm for TDi? I did not have this problem with mk1 octavia. Any information or advice welcome.

Permissable oil consumption is 1 litre per 1000km.

I currently run a BMW 320d SE Tourer and before that I had an Audi A4 SE TDi. Both used around 1 litre per 1500 - 2000 miles. It was explained to me by the BMW garage that the piston rings on some modern diesels are designed to not bed in. As a result an amount of oil is lost/burnt off via the exhaust. Rather than having the oil changed at more frequent intervals, the oil level is simply topped up and this enables higher mileage vehicles to use extended service intervals. My Audi would run to around 21,000 miles between services and the BMW manages around 22,000 miles.

I shall probably be changing to an Octavia L&K 2.0 TDi Estate in a few months following a change in company car budgets. I fully expect the Octavia to use a similar amount of oil.

The fully synthetic oil needed to keep the car on variable servicing intervals is available from outlets such as Halfords at lower prices than VAG garages. I haven't compared Halfords with prices at Skoda garages, perhaps someone else can comment on that?

I have used about 3 litres in 13.5k miles (Octy 2 2.0Tdi) but the rate at which it is being used is decreasing.

I have found a litre of the required oil was cheaper at my local Skoda garage than Halfrauds. Haven't looked around the internet to find cheaper suppliers though.

A shade over 10K on mine and ive had to top up twice with one litre of oil each time.

Sounds about normal given what ive heard here. In fact its not far off what I used in my Fabia vrs. It may vary depending on how you drive.

I've used three litres over nearly 18k miles. 1.9 TDI

It's pretty standard fpr a deisel engine to use oil over the initial 10k mls or so, mine has used about a litre over 12k mls, but I would have expected consumption to drop to a negligble amount after that. - still doesn'e nessecarily point to a problem as there always seem to be a proportion that use more.

I've only done 3000 miles in mine so far , but there is no sign of the oil level moving yet

You're not driving it hard enough;)

bur seriously they do seem to use a lot of oil in the first 30k

True , but I did get over 600 miles on a tank of fuel for the first time which I was quite pleased with

I've done around 5000 miles mainly town driving with very little change in oil level but now I'm doing more motorway miles, the level is dropping at a faster rate. Had to put some in last week - brought it from a VW garage (Castrol oil) just over £12 for a 1 litre of the 507 00 (variable servicing) stuff.

I'd suggest giving your engine a good warm up then a good high rev drive for a few miles. I was told by an independant garage this is how to stop it and a friend with a VW bora said it worked for him. Mine has never used oil at a silly rare (so far touch wood).

Well I have to agree the consuption of oil in my1.9 TDI DSG auto used a Litre of oil in the first 6000 miles,Also the oil is cheaper to get from Skoda than Halfords, and with Skoda you get a pouch to put it in WOW how good is that.?

Skoda are also cheaper for standard wipers front and rear than halford too.

Not to mention that they are curved so wipe correctly too :)

The long life oil people say that long life oil has a tendancy to glaze the cylinder walls and be drawn past the piston rings thus burning off. They recommend when running in to stay below 1/2 throttle for the first 100 miles and then progressively accelerate harsher right up to maximum throttle over the following couple of hundred miles. This ensure the piston rings bed in sufficiently to prevent oil being drawn past them.

Treating the engine gently particularly over thousands of miles will exaserbate the problem and lead to more oil usage with the cylinder glaze being harder to burn off even if you do give the car a blast.

I've seen proof of this in friends cars based on the 105 and 140 variants of the PD TDI engine. I topped mine up yesterday at 5,700 miles. That was the first sign of the oil level dropping whereas my friends golf used that amount in 3,500 miles but he was light footed for the first few thousand miles.

Just put a litre in after 11k( tdi 4x4), my fabia before never used any but was an SDI not a TDI so I put it down to that
