Fabia 2008 1.2 - Engine hesitates on acceleration and occassional rough idle

My Mk2 1.2 Fabia has an issue where it hesitates when accelerating - its like the fuel/ air is being restricted and then suddenly it returns to normal and the revs immediately pick up and it drives normally. It doesn't do this all the time, it tends to just be during heavy acceleration which I can mostly avoid. 

In the past I had some issues with it also having a rough idle - almost like it was misfiring however that problem hasn't appeared recently.

Spark plugs have been replaced fairly recently - I wanted to check if there was a typical issue for this model of Fabia that perhaps you guys would know about to point me in the right direction. 

Unfortunately the rough engine doesn't give a warning light so there is nothing for me to check. Was planning on buying an OBD11 but again hoping I could be pointed in the right direction for possible issues/ things to check? If I really get my foot down while its struggling it might be enough to trigger a fault, but ideally would like to avoid this!
