Weird noise thats like a wheel bearing but isnt.

Featured Replies

Hi all ill start with a bit of history, i went through a puddle and lost my abs, in reality it was just a bad wheel bearing that threw out a couple of sensors however since then I've had a wheel bearing noise that has progressively gotten worse and worse, I've had the wheel bearing changed and then changed the drive shaft and recently had the car up on a lift and swang and pried on everything i possibly can to see if its loose and its not everything is tight and as far as i can see is fine, the car is a mk3 63 plate octavia estate 1.6tdi standard front wheel drive, has anyone else had a reoccurring wheel bearing noise when all your bearing are fine ?

Are you hearing it at all speeds or at just higher speeds?

At all speeds but the noise does change frequency i guess at higher speeds, also putting the clutch in or out doesn't change the sound and doesn't matter what gear you are in the sound is the same only really changes with speed

I am getting two new rear tyres as they are slightly sawtoothed although im 99% sure the noise is coming from the front which are both falkens on less than 6k miles now

I was going to say your roof rails can make a strange type of noise at speed, hard to identify until you know what it was. I can hear mine at around 60 mph up over you see, being my first ever estate I didn't realise what the noise was, until someone obviously pointed it out to me. Nothing below that speed, though.

Have you tried swapping your wheels and tyres over from front to back?

I actually havent yet but that could be a good shout, ill try it at the weekend and see if that makes a difference, and yeah you can hear the roof rails on motorways it spooked me at first haha

If I was betting, I'd put money on the new rear tyres solving the issue. Had the same thing with a previous Focus ST and my wife's Tucson.
