Mk3 or Mk4 Octavia?

Featured Replies

I’m currently driving a Mk2 Octavia 1.2TSi (11 plate) that’s about to be retired.

My budget for a replacement seems to put me squarely in the market for a late Mk3 (lower miles) or early Mk4 (higher miles) model. The 1.2 Mk2 has felt OK powerwise so I guess the newer 1.0 would feel just as OK, but perhaps the 1.5 would be nicer. I’m sure whichever I get will be a significant step up from where I’m at with the Mk2 but what advice do you all have about which of the options (Mk3 v Mk4, 1.0 v 1.5) I should prefer including potential gremlins and repair costs?

Thanks so much!

A Mk3 FL would seem to be the sweet spot for you. I debated a 3.5 versus a 4 when I got my vRS and I don’t regret my choice. That said, I have a digi dash and the larger screen so it’s very much a halfway house.

There is quite a difference between the two, in terms of interior and exterior design. The interior on the Mk4 is much nicer (at least on the vRS).

I’d go for the 1.5. The 1.0 is a brilliant engine in a Polo or Ibiza but it’s not enough for an Octavia. Not to mention, if you put people in it, it will struggle. There is virtually no difference in running or maintenance costs between the two engines, or even the models. The Mk3 should be cheaper, but as I found out, get a late model (mine is a 2020) and you have the same issues!
