Ever rewired up your 5.1 surround?

Featured Replies

And found it to have better sound quality when its rewired in?

Done some moving about so dismantled my PC to reassess the "working" potential of my I.T area to be more condusive to general study for the next 3 years.... Couldn't remember which of the 5 plugs on the 5.1 surround the 3 jackplugs went in to, so put them in a bit random until it sounded "ok" from lying down behind the PC desk....

It sounds quite nice now. :speaker: Although I still think something's not quite right... Its not quite bassy and as clear as my car for example....

Something is out of phase I reckon. You know +/- connections reversed.

Perhaps you need to pull a cable tie a bit tighter.

Cleaning up a room and moving furniture around can always have a psychological effect on how much better an audio system sounds.

If the bass is lacking I wonder if you plugged the subwoofer into one of the standard channels. If your 5.1 system is configured properly you may not be getting anything less than 80Hz sent to your sub because it's fed from one of the main channels.

I do own ONE thing not held together with cable ties. Anyway, they're an invention from heaven. :P Nothing you can't do with a cable tie or two! :D

Edit: I have loads of multicoloured ports on the 5.1 card. There might be a proper way to do it if someone can tell me how their system is plugged in? Its one plug for bass and two for the other speakers I think.

Ahem, don't even go there

I wasn't going anywhere, you filthy minded individual. Actually, now you've lowered the tone I'm struggling to think how a cable tie could help in certain bedroom situations? Handcuffs I guess, but you'd need a blade handy to cut it after unless you get reversible ones. :D

Hold on, I said 'don't even go there' and what did you do?

I use a dedicated AV amp and speakers for my surround sound system but it sounds like you are using the soundcard in your PC and several 3.5mm jacks. Although it's not a standard, many sound card manufacturers use the same colours for front/back left and right. Take a look at the documentation for your soundcard or motherboard and see which colour socket links to which speaker.

Alternatively, take a look at the layout on my motherboard which has a 7.1 Creative Labs Soundblaster Live! chip on board. It may be similar to yours.
