Dying alarm battery 🪫 (MK2 Octavia)

Featured Replies

I'm aware we've had a few threads on this subject. But I've not seen one on this particular question.

In short: can I just remove the alarm? Obviously I no longer have an alarm but I can live without it. I'll update my insurance accordingly.

Longer version:

2012 Octavia 1.4tsi estate. Had issues with the alarm going off regularly about 3 years ago. Not sure how but it just went away on its own.

It started going off again recently. Hazard lights would get flashing and then after a while the alarm would go off. Yesterday it happened loads. But it was late so I didn't do anything about it.

This morning I checked all the door, boot and bonnet sensors were working and they were. Went to turn the car round so I could remove the alarm and the battery was dead. It's 5.5 years old so about time. A mobile mechanic did it for just under £200. I mentioned the alarm going off and he said it'd be due to the low battery (I'd read it could be this too). Great.

10 minutes after he left the hazards were blinking and kept doing it.

So I took the alarm off. Cracked the case open and the PCB has corrosion on it from the battery leaking. So I can't just buy a new battery. Well I probably can't, assuming PCB is damaged.

Didn't want to put it back as alarm will keep going off. So I tested the car without it on and it's fine.

Put everything back. No issues or anything.

I could get a working one off eBay, fit a new battery and put it in my car. Or I could just ignore it. It's an old car. I'm leaning towards this option.

Any problems you could foresee?

Thanks

We had a recurring false alarm problem on a previous MY2007 mk2 Octy. Our Indy said they usually just cut the wires as the car was getting on a bit and not a likely scrot target.

'snip' done and all was fine for as long as we had the car (about 4 years) and have not heard of any problems from the new owners (daughter, so of course I'd get to hear!).

IIRC the availability of official replacements has dried up (and they cost megabux!); they were available via aliexpress for a while but I haven't seen one on offer lately.

Great to hear.

My Octavia is quite battered tbh. My wife has pranged it 3 times (new driver) so it's definitely not likely to be a target for thieves. Unless they get really desperate. Despite it's poor looks it's still a fair bit below 100k so I'm not planning to give up on it just yet.

Thanks.

Octys by & large tend to just keep going. There are known weaknesses but as long as you pay attention to maintenance they're pretty reliable.

As regards your copilot's predilection for 'third party objects', mine has been driving for 40+ years and seems unable to avoid such interactions - typically once every 6 months on average. All cosmetic, none serious but still a PITA for insurance and for me (as I have to fix the 'adjustments'). Anyone have a Mazda 2 front wing going spare?

Fantastic resource Mike. Thanks!

I'm going to take it somewhere I can borrow their microscope to see if the PCB is damaged (once I've cleaned the corrosion off with iso alcohol). If it's ok I'll have a look at changing the battery.

But certainly for the time being I'll just do without.

I should add that she's been pretty good for the past 12 months or do. We just had a rocky first 6 months where she seemed to get magnetically attracted to stationary objects. Thankfully two of those we owned (garden fence and wall) and the other was a friend's wall (but minor). Plus my 'repairs' (I use the term loosely) are far from professional.

That and the kids, who do a great job of wrecking the interior. 😂
