Whenever I set out on a journey, after a few hundred yards I get 2 or 4 chimes like a pen tapped against a wine glass. Is this a speed warning as it seems to happen around the speed limit for the road I am on? If I reduce my speed then increase it I cannot reproduce the chimes.

Not a definite ding like chime more a sort of tsch! tsch!

Any ideas what this may be?

You might be hearing the ping you get when the system detects a change in the speed limit, when you transit from a 40mph speed limit to a 30mph speed limit for example. That would be why slowing down and speeding up in the same speed zone doesn’t trigger it.

The sound like tapping wineglass is what I get as a speeding warning sound. However I have not observed any sound when the car detects a change of speed limit. I have however completely different theory of what is going on.

The overspeed warning does not come exactly at the speed limit but from 10km overspeeding. However the speed limit detection of the car is not perfect and sometimes it can be wrong. I think it is likely that in this case the speed limit the car thinks it is on is actually 10km lower than the real speed limit and therefore the OP gets the warning about at the real speed limit. It might be that the car observes the correct speed limit soon after this and therefore the chime does not come again at this same speed but it would come at 10km higher speed. The car shows what it thinks is the speed limit and you can see that sometime it is simply wrong.

If somebody is bothered by the chimes they can be turned off as I do as a habit in the beginning of every drive like some other button presses as well.

As above. The sound you're hearing is likely the overspeed warning (exceeding what the car thinks is the speed limit). It can be turned off easily (right-hand thumb-wheel on steering wheel) - it's become a habit for me now, first thing I do after starting the car, takes a second or two to do. As far as I know, there's no audible warning for a change of speed limit. And yes, the car's onboard mapping of speed limits is woefully bad - so many errors around where I am (north Wales). Even recognition of a clearly-posted speed limit sign can be overridden a few yards further along the road by the map data's incorrect speed limit - followed by a correction as you pass a repeater, followed almost immediately by the car again reverting to the incorrect mapped data 😂

I too have been hearing dings at changes of speed limits. It is particularly noticeable at road junctions and roundabouts etc. where there may be more than one change of limit.

If you go to vehicle settings > assist systems and press the > next to the Speed warning (to the right of the toggle) you get another screen where can turn off “Info sound when changing the permitted maximum speed”
