Windows toolbar

Featured Replies

On the desktop toolbar if you drag and move files and folders around how can you keep the changes. Everytime I restart the computer the files and folders are back as they were before. (windows xp)

I'm used to an office toolbar where you can move the buttons around and they stay put!

Do you mean the icons on the desk top?

Right click>Arrange Items by> AutoArrange (Uncheck the tick)

You can now put them where you want

Hope this answers your question

Are you talking about the location of shortcuts and files on your desktop? If so, there's no in-built way for you to keep them from moving. So I use a small, free and very useful utility called 'Icon Restore'. Google for it, should be the 1st result back.

HTH.

I'm talking about the toolbars on the task bar - desktop, favourites, links, quick launch etc etc

If I create a new toolbar eg scowlsandgrowls can I put my mostly used files/folders/programs into and rearrange the order to suit eg all excel files together word programs etc etc

Drag n Drop to the left side

The default setting on the start menu in Win XP is set so that the most recently and commonly used programs are displayed. If thats the bit you mean, you can right click the programs on the list and choose 'pin to start menu'.

What i am referring to is not the start menu but the windows toolbars - right click on task bar - top menu toolbars - choice of ones mentioned before eg desktop - lists all shortcuts folders files on desk top - mine goes right down the screen and beyond - it is this toolbar that I want to customise so that I have certain files and folders next to each other. You can drag and drop into order and they stay there in your session but once the pc is restarted the order reverts the original layout which appears to be a mixture of order on the desktop / alpha / no order at all.

the favourites tool bar defaults to folders in a alpha order followed by files and programs in alpha order

the icon restore programme appears to refer to just the desktop itself - not the toolbar.

tks
