What do you guys think

Featured Replies

i've been looking at a website for speakers etc, thanks to whoever it was that posted the link... sorry i have a terrible memory.

Anyway, i've been looking at the speakers in this here link:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=445&tab=4

Now i did the search on 17cm components (i'm sure i read somewhere this was the size for the Octy's front speakers) but i dont know the size of the OE tweeters or rather the "hole" they sit in, my main concern is the depth of the door skins as i've been reading this causes problems if the main units are too deep...

Anyone got any ideas ?

Also has anyone had experience in Phase Linear ? i'm under the impression they are pretty good but had never wanted to spend that kind of cash...

Well done you found a speaker i hadn't looked at -the mounting depth is 65mm (factory fits are about 53mm i think) so they might begetting a bit deep for the Octy doors. Others have mentioned tin cutters at that sort of depth. I found this info below. They are supposed to have a laid back sound which would make them a good choice if they'd fit. :)

well i'm not shy when it comes to "modifying" a door to make a speaker fit, although i feel cutting the inner plastics of a Renault door may be a little different to the Octy .. ?

I'm told (by Paul i think) that there is a metal "flap" that can be persuaded into moving alittle to aid the fitting of deeper baskets, but i dont know in all honsty and bow to anyone that can clear these things up for me.

Thanks for that other link, i think that if i can get them in there they're the speakers for me.

Get this

Find a Dremmel... then do this...

... and repaint bare metal

Then most 17s will fit ... apart from the American style stuff with stupid 'off daft massive magnets !

(i do not condone anyone who would dream of taking an abrasive wheel to a nearly new car ;) )

I have used Kenwood dual mag 17cm components before. These are very shallow due to a clever magnet design but sound really good in my opinion.

60 mm mounting depth

Dual Mags, 17CM 2 Way Components, Includes Adjustable X-Overs, Mids + Tweeters, 200 Watts Peak, 50 Watts RMS, Frequency Response 30-70kHz, 92dB Sensitivity, Pearl Mica Cone With Twin Repulsion Neodymium Magent, Swivel Hypernyl Dome Tweeter,

Sounded good with a Kenwood amp in my MK4 Astra.

60 cm mounting depth

:eye-poppi Wow. You must have some seriously thick doors to handle that. Probably weigh more than a sub too :p :D

:ices_rofl Okay okay... if you want to fit Ross's speakers (which were developed for the McClaron F1 for their small / lightweight properties by the way) then i suggest you weld two dustbins to your outer door skins and knock the partition wall through !

Over half a metre deep mounting depth Ross ?... I'm impressed at your girth Sir !

(Watch out for narrow bridges  )

ok ok ok.

Ive edited to 60mm.

I dont know eh.....

:p

I tried to find some of these Kenwoods Ross to avoid the cutting job... but couldn't get my hands on any... they aren't too easy to find...

Damn good though and more full midrange/bass than you'd expect from a shallow mount speaker... good enough for McClaron ! ! !

Ross, any idea if they will mount the furby (oooh errr missus). Or anyone know what the max mount width is for the furby, probably not that deep I would think. I remember people saying it was shallow, and interfeers with the leccy window, but not sure how deep I can go.... gotta change these standard ones.

I've no idea tbh, never had a door card off on a Fabia.

I will probably upgrade the speakers at some point, wouldnt mind a good CD H/U and changer aswell.

:p

Bass junkies was where I got mine from.

Very good speakers :0)

ok, thanks for the options guys...

The main reason i was looking at the Phase Linears was due to them being a decent unit with a compact inline cross over, the one on those kenwoods looks pretty big and i wanted to hide everything within the door skin so something bulky wouldnt really be ideal.

I dont fancy having to cut chunks from the doors either but i guess i'll have to wait and see what happens...

Thanks again

i just looked at the specs for the PL's and it says they have a fitting depth of 65mm, how much room is there behind the Kenwoods at 60mm ?? 5mm isnt a great amount and i was thinking they might go in with alittle effort and hopefully without cutting anything.

thinking about it i suppose it also depends on the shape of the basket and size of the magnet.

ok' date=' thanks for the options guys...

Yep , the kenwood crossovers won't easily fit in the doors.

I have mine under the dash , one on each side.

right a decision at last...

i'm gonna wait till i've got the car... then have a look round at some components and the bits and bobs that come with them, i'll be keeping the car for at least 6 years (hopefully) so whatever i buy will stay in there when i sell it so making small holes in things isnt going to be to much of an issue.

I do like the look of the PL's but i dont want to have to cut anything to fit them so i'll have to wait and see.

Thanks for the help though.

No messin, just bang a set of Crystal CSC60s's. Strangely enough also available from Car Audio Direct.

I had some in my old Octy, they are amazing and pinpoint accurate. See back to this section in July 03 for photos.

:pimp:

Here's the Crystal CS60 in the door, so you can have a gander! :tilt:

Well I was trying to add an attachment, but it won't let me for some reason? Sorry chaps, have a look back in July 03 for picys.
