boomy exhaust

Featured Replies

i have a turbo back blueflame system with sports cat and i find it quite boomy at times, how could i reduce the volume of the system without physically changing it?

i am thinking that any of the following may change it:-

heatwrap exhaust - very little difference sound wise and maybe a small gain in turbo spool

change tail pipe - my tail pipes are hidden under the rear bumper like a standard car so wondering if changing the rear bumper and tail pipe to one that exits behind the car rather than under it might lower the volume.

sound dadening - just stick a shed load of sound deadening in the boot to cut some out.

any other ideas/thoughts?

Heatwrap. I've heard this before, and apparently it's a 'thumbs up' modification. I doubt it would control the 'boom' your recieveing from your exhaust though.

Changing the tail pipe, will not reduce any noise.

Sorry i'm not much help on this.

I think boom is controlled by the size of fittings isn't it? So it might mean changing a backbox, or perhaps cutting and shutting an additional silencer somewhere into the system. Not sure anything non-physical will alter the actual sound it makes.

might just be a case of making the cabin better sound proofed rather than the exhaust quieter :D

earplugs? ;)

I find a real difference having the back seats and parcel shelf in. Doesn't help those suffering outside the car though.

Ben, i have a Miltek middle box if you need it............... Cheap of course:rolleyes:

Bengie, I think this has been covered before, it's to do with the exhaust exiting under the car, may well be worth sound deadening the boot area and maybe seeing if you can do a cutout in the bumper to extend the tailpipe, I ran a BF exhaust for 40K and no problems with booming and I spend 50% ogf the working day on a handsfree mobile...if it had suffered booming it would have come off straight away, as it is it is going on my NEW oct mk 1 vRS, a lovely silver 54 plate with only 11K on the clock....still has the new car smell to it it has been used so little:thumbup:

BTW did you get the resonated or non resonated system, makes a big difference so i am led to believe!

i have no idae tbh mate, i booked it asking for a performance system :)

I think its the way it exits under the car TBH Yours is the noisiest car I've been in yet its not the noisiest from the outside.

I think the sound is resonating under the car and behind the bumper and acting like a giant bass box thingmy.

IMHO the tail pipe needs to exit the rear bumper. I'll come round and make a cut-out for you with a Stanley knife if you like

Try removing the bumper and going for a drive to see if it makes a difference - but it may not because there is a inner metal skin. Or get some flexible ducting and shove it over the end of the exhaust then out under the bumper.

He actually means it is very very loud and not in a pleasant way ;)

LOL... Does it just rattle everything inside the car, including yourself Bengie?

Stick in a graphic equalizer into your ECU and notch out 60-100Hz. :D

First off I would have a chat with Blue Flame to find out the "science behind the design" We all think we know but odds are we dont.

Personally I cant see poking out the back will make a massive amount of difference as you are normally leaving the exit noise behind when you are travelling at speed. If you sit in a car on a rolling road you cant believe your car makes that much noise at speed

If you go that route probaby easier to get a RS rear bumper s/hand than cut & carve your existing one. These are likely to be readily available at the breakers as most people bend the front end :o :O (If you find a front end I need a complete one !)

I had a decatted Subaru Estate that was terrible. I had a long chat with Steve at Noisekiller & he came out & sound deadened the boot floor, doors, Spare wheel well etc & that did make quite a difference

don't worry i wouldn't be "doing a goochie" on the rear bumper, i have more brains than that ;)

what amazes me most is that you got Stevie wonder to actually agree to cut out your bumper for you, don't see why you made him do it with a blunt chisel though
