K&N filter are they all a poor fit

Featured Replies

For the last couple of months the intake noise on my car has steadily got worse until I coud stand no more and took the intake and airbox apart to find out what was causing it.............

The result is I have put the original paper filter back in and now the car is nice and quiet again

The cause of the noise...........the K&N filter has a hardish rubber seal which is supposed to seal one side of the airbox from the other so air has to pass through it ....basically it doesn't do this and air was bypassing the filter and going straight to the turbo unfiltered........the original paper filter has a soft rubber seal and works very well ....so after all that does anyone know of a performance filter that will fit properly?

My green filter was exactly the same, and for the same reason I went back to a paper one. That and the fact that holding the green filter up to the light revealed rather large spacings (well, seemed large) and I didn't like the idea of crud being pulled into the engine. I have heard the pipercross filter is a better fit?

I'd stay with paper and just change it a lot more often.

No, they're not all a bad fit.

Had one on my 1.6 Corsa and another on my MK4 Astra and they both fitted perfectly.

However, that was 5+ years ago so things could have changed.

in my experience i would say that they are all generally quite a bad fit, expecially the ones for fords, normally to fit them to the zetec engines you have to do a cut-n-shut to make it fit

The one on my Mondeo fits perfectly (in fact I only took it out yesterday to clean it ) and it's a nice snug fit. Quite different to my experience with Green!!!

Echo the above.

Had a green filter in when I got the car fettled at tuners down south - when i went to clean it, i found it essentially rattled around in the airbox as there were no locating studs, or they looked to have been shorn off - which meant in effect a 5mm gap on two sides of the airbox or a very poor seal.

At last service at a certain other garage, I mentioned this in passing and, seeing as they had the bonnet up anyway, they dropped in a K&N that i had sitting in the back and voiced horror at the fit of the Green filter. Maybe I just got a duff one.

And anyway Rob, the 1.9 TDI PD130 is a noisy sonofa.....mine whistles and whirs all over the shop, and that's been a constant feature - people always hear me coming.
