Aparently they are Ok ish in light snow but if you are going abroad in the winter where chains are required these are no good as far as the local plod are concerned

Yep, I was aware of the European laws. I was mainly thinking for this country when we have a bit of snow and all hell breaks loose when the local council gets caught out.

Plus, I live on a hill and our street never gets any form of salt or grit. Chains damage the alloy (or so I've been told) and these seemed like a reasonable solution.

i'd suggest that more people should follow our continental cousins...

have your posh alloys with summer tyres on

then get a set of steel rims with winter tyres on

it's not just the tread pattern

its the softer compound that gives more grip

if the road surface temp is below 5c summer tyres

apparantly don't warm up sufficiently

I agree. I was pricing up this option, then I asked my insurer about it and because the winter wheels weren't the ones the car left the showroom with, they wanted an increase in premium. So, if you factor in the price of second hand wheels, new winter tyres and increase in premium, the
