Gatso's

Featured Replies

Anyone got any experience of the dreaded

There are some Gatso's that work from facing you, they have a round lens (sometimes red) and seem to work off a small set of 3-4 wide lines about 5-10m infront of them painted on the road.

Bedfordshire seems to have a few of them, particularly around Milton Keynes if I recall.

I have heard tales of it being possible to trigger off gatsos from driving

in the opposite direction fast enough - however, the quoted speeds were

pretty high! I don't really know that much about the directional

behaviour of gatsos, and I was of the same opinion that they worked

from behind.

I've never managed to set that camera on the A6 in Heaton Chapel off

while travelling in the opposite direction, and it's not like I stick to 30

all the time down there!

I do know enough about them to know that without the markings and

being on the "wrong" side of the road you could question the accuracy

enough to be able to be let off a penalty...

As rightly pointed out , bedford does have those "round " type style Gatso that DO work as you approach them .

The normal ones "square" do Flash if you approach them TOO fast , experienced it myself.

Again always seems to be when NO other cars are on the road, never had a ticket for setting it of as you approach.

Dont know enough about the legality of this to comment, surely they are calibrated to catch cars as they pass, NOT oncoming vehicles.

will probably explain ALL but here's a potted version in my own words:-

Speed cameras are broken down into four categories.

1. Gatso - Takes a picture from behind and measures your distance with a big row of white lines. This is the traditional style of camera.

2. Truvelo - Stares at you and takes a picy from the front where you will see 3 white lines. I think these work digitally and see in the dark so no flash. Lots of 'em can be found on the A14

3. SPECS - Average speed - Big tall blue things that look a bit like traffic master towers - These read your average speed over a distance of say, a mile and are double evil

4. Mobile radar camera's - The bab set up by the road and zap ya

All four haunt me. So I bought a Road Angel which is a fantastic little friend and comes highly recommended by my good self

Standard Gatsos will flash speeding cars in both directions but you only get the fine etc if the white lines are down on your side of the road. Hope this is what happened in Stoke

You may find the information you need in The Speed Trap Bible which is in our web links here:

http://www.speed-trap.co.uk/index.html

GATSOs are the radar-based speed cameras which normally photograph the rear of speeding vehicles while the Truvelo - which is activated when the vehicles cross cables buried in the road just ahead of the camera - normally photographs vehicles head on. I have used the word 'normally' advisedly because I have just read on the Speed Trap Bible site that both cameras can be set to photograph vehicles travelling in either direction. If you crossed white lines painted on the road as you approached the GATSO which flashed you, then it may just be that it had been set to photograph vehicles head on.

OK stop it you are scaring me :(

Whats wrong with people , I have never committed a crime, never been violent to anyone, never wanted too. Well apart from the Muppet who stole my car a few years back.

So why are you making me feel like one cos i like to push on :)

Looks like i will have to get a radar detector or something , whats a littel angel how much , sure there has been forum on this topic before :?:

Whats the best one :?:

Decisions, decisions!

Here's my own review of the "top" contenders:

Geodesy/Geodesy Plus/ Geodesy Plus with radar

Relatively cheap to buy with good performance. Normal Geodesy will notify you of fixed locations, you download as often as you like via an external modem. There is a subscription charge after the first year,

The question has been asked over on the Police/scoobynet forum. According to the traffic police over there the best combination is a GPS type one and a laser diffuser. That seems to be what the traffic guys are running on their cars

Right, I'm now going to follow the advice of Mr Plod! S6R Neo going back today, Road Angel going in on Friday, nothing else being fitted, honest guvnor ;)

PS Did I mention that I'm having a remote opening garage door fitted which necessitates having 2 little infrared thingies fitted on the front of the car ;)

I'm hoping Geodesy might offer an upgrade with Laser diffuser in the future.

  • 3 weeks later...

If they did it would probably be expensive. Their Radar detector that goes with the morpheus unit and the road pilot is over

Haven't I seen a report in a newspaper recently of someone being reported for prosecution over the use of a laser diffuser?
