Kit car insurance?

Featured Replies

I'm toying with the idea of getting a kit car (second hand most probably - don't have the money to buy a new one!), probably a lesser known kit car rather than a mainstream Westfield as they command too higher prices (I'd get it checked over prior to buying though to make sure it isn't held together with pritt stick!).

But my question is what is insurance like on these custom kit cars? Most seem to be powered by 2.0 engines, so I'm guessing we're talking 0-60 times around 6 seconds ish, which in a normal car would equate to silly premiums. I'm 21, been driving for 3 years and 2 years NCB (which aren't in use as I have my Octy through work).

Thanks. :)

Specialist insurers will give you a pretty decent quote - look in the back of some of the kit car magazines and ring a couple.

You'll probably get an agreed value and a restricted annual mileage policy for a very reasonable price.

won't you lose some if not all of your no claims Rob if you don't have insurance on something ?

agree with what Alex says about specialist insurance etc

That's part of the reason behind another car. :) I quite like the idea of a kit car, especially if insurance isn't too bad.

NCB lasts for 2 years, if not used.

It's quite a common thing amongst bikers who are having a break to insure "something" every other year just to keep an NCB alive , even if it's only a V5 for a bike that has long since died and been stripped for bits.

I know someone who bought an MOT failed scooter for a tenner and insured it TPO for about 40 quid rather than lose his no claims.

Fairly obviously he never actually rode it but it was worth doing when he bought a new bike a few years on
