Community speed guns...

Speed Guns At The Ready (from The Argus)

"Speed guns are to be handed to community groups to catch motorists who race around the county

....

The council said the new speed guns would be used in villages around East Grinstead but Sussex Police said they could not yet reveal locations.

Although those using the speed guns cannot take the law into their own hands, locals will zap drivers who pass them with the speed gun and hand their details over to the police to look into.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Camera Safety Partnership said: "They can jot down the registration plates and the police will write a letter to the motorist." "

I good idea in principle I think. What about everyone else?

Crap.

So what's to stop them jotting down a registration of any old car? Or even getting the reg wrong? Will they also be able to decide if said vehicle was going a safe speed for the conditions (eg hooning past a school at chucking out time at 30mph, but not speeding?)....

Still, it will be interesting to see where they site these people and whether they let off their friends and neighbours! ;)

Chris

Utterly pointless; what's to stop them ignoring the "40mph everywhere clubbers", and sending in a list of registrations of people who "looked at me funny" or were guilty of "driving a modded Japanese car"?

And Traffic Officers have to have regular training/certification on their ability to use the speed guns properly........what's to stop Mrs Trellis and Enid from the post office adding 4mph to some innocent man/womans' speed because one of them has parkinsons? How many of us truly have rock-steady hands?

Too much margin for error and simply a bean-counting measure to reduce traffic cop numbers even further. Shockingly short-sighted.

They have this in Warrington of all places, at Grapenhall village, the signs have been up for a couple of years but I have only seen the nimby's out once. I was on the triumph so wheelied past them and the bike let out and almighty backfire at the same time.

The uk is going nut's I tell you ........ Terry Wogan had it to a tee on the radio this morning, the new DVLA advert saying we know where all the untaxed car's are, but the government has no idea where all the illegal immigrants and terrorists are :D

:iagree: Had me chuckling!

Call for a "sooty remap"?

I like the idea of Plod sending you a letter in a similar vain to the happy/smiley face 30 mph temporary signs that get placed around from time to time - ie just a gentle reminder to watch the speed etc

Do agree with the above comments though about who gets done.

I think this community speed watch thing is total rollocks.

As mentioned, who can guarantee these hairdrier wielding NIMBY'S are going to be honest and impartial at all times?

What a load of old cr@p! :finger::mad:

Build more bypasses so we don't have to go through NIMBYtown.

Preferably with the enormous concrete supporting pillars in their back gardens... ;)

:iagree: Very succinctly put.

.

Looks like a pointless exercise to keep the blue rinse brigade off

the backs of the local police.

i drove passed a school near where my dad lives , they had pupils (infants) sat out by the side of the road with a speed gun

it didn't look like a very safe thing to be doing , and probably not too healthy either

I thought the sad losers had stopped doing this kind of rubbish. They did it somewhere in the deep south of England and cacked themselves when drivers reacted a bit badly.

I'd be tempted to mow them down, like a service to a society already overstuffed with NIMBY's and welfare claiming fact ignoring idealists.

Silly thing is, most of those caught by the saddos are actually their own fellow village/neighbourhood dwellers, and not the typically claimed commuters 'racing' through.

If it becomes commonplace I will fit the biggest, loudest air horn to my fecking car and blast 'em all to hell!

I'll have to update my camera detector with a NIMBYCAM database :D

Road safety: Community brought into efforts to control speed in Warrington

More bull on the subject from these nice people.

Thats the buggers, I shall wheelie past them more often to taunt them, I would not mind but the community watch area in warrington is on a safe little stretch of wide freshly surfaced a road with a gentle rise, these arses are out to stop people ruining their sundays with noisy cars and bikes accelerating within ear shot. Only started happening since some knobber of a footballer moved in as well

Are they going to jot the reg numbers down of the To$$ers on the phone and hand those details to the Police...............I think not.......

I think it's awfully good for the community to pull together for the mobile scoreboard service:D

A friend of mine got peeved when a radar trap appeared on the quiet road to his house (He didnt get done!). A woman living on the road was constantly complaining of speeding cars.

Guess who was the first yes first driver to get booked ? yes it was the woman making the complaints !!!

The worrying bit is the continued use of the word "perceived" in that article.

To pensioner who last drove at the Normandy landings, 20mph is a reckless speed.

Cheers for the linkies chaps; Confirms my thoughts about these "schemes", in particular that one Police authority seem to be prepared to instigate proceedings on the "evidence" of multiple reports by these Nimbys!

A similar thing happened here in a small village I travel through to get to work. The road is 30mph leading to an NSL, and as you'd expect people tear through there and upset the residents, so they complained to the police. Police came and hid behind a speed gun and sure enough lots of people were caught, told the errors of their ways and let go.

A local resident who works here brought the finished report in and it showed that almost 75% of people caught speeding lived in the village itself!

Chris

I think it's pointless. I feel sorry for the people seen with these speed guns. there life will be at risk

Find out where they are, then get all the cars down to do vMAX runs...

Once you have done the runs go past and ask for the top speeds :)
