I'm posting this question on behalf of my brother who owns a felicia 1.3 s reg.

He's no good with computers or spanners, and has begun to ask questions which lead me to believe he wants me to be his mechanic.

I bought him a haynes manual, to no avail.

He told me his battery light stays on when the car is started, 'alternator' - i thought.

On inspection, fan belt and pulleys fouled with oil, so slipping.

Presume camshaft oil seal is leaking and oil thrown about.

If I'm correct, its a job i can handle and save him a few quid.

So..anyone know the dimensions of camshaft oil seal?

Should i post this on a technical forum

Any info greatly appreciated.

dom.

if you go to a motor factors, they should be able to supply the right oil seal just by the description of the car, it will only be about 5 quid, but fitting it is the fun part.....

Congrats on the diagnostic method. As for the seal, as Tom says, a decent motor factor should be able to select it from model, engine size and year data. I've never worked on a Felicia, so can't advise on method.

thanks for your responses guys.

i normally go to a local bearing/seal manufacturer as they are so much cheaper, and universally applicable if you have the dimensions - hence my first post.

But Tom, when you say, 'fitting it is the fun part', are you alluding to the lack of elbow room in that part of the engine bay? Is it engine out? Say its not so.

cheers

Dom

it's just not a nice job to do that's all..... i've seen cars scrapped for lesser things than this becuase it's not economically viable

hi tom

haven't tackled this job yet, but got the seal.

method seems to be....

loosen alternator

remove drivebelt

undo crankshaft pulley bolt

remove pulley

remove old oil seal and drift new one in

reassemble

got to be 'economically viable' for a 3 quid seal?

thanks for the positive thoughts

Have you actually checked the charge rate?

just realised i wrote camshaft instead of crankshaft in first post.

this probably caused some confusion. :o

if so, apologies.

I've not worked on a skoda before.

no i haven't, and to be honest i wouldn't know how to.

but i would not expect the alternator to be performing well when the drivebelt and pulleys are slick with oil.

wheres it coming from though?

my guess is the crankshaft oil seal...?
