Air filters

Featured Replies

Think this is the best place for this, so here goes.

Looking at getting a replacement/performance air filter for a Fabia vRS, and have noticed there are sever manufacturers to choose from. Which filters are you all using, and what are your reccomendations.

Pipercross panel filter but if I was going down the route of changing the turbo, remap, etc I'd go for a Pipercross Viper.

there are lots of types available, a alot of them seem to be made by the same manufactor just different color logos:rolleyes:

cotton type are less hassle to clean.....

Wonder why that would be...lol

I had a Viper on my Astra, for what its worth on back to back rolling road test it lost me 3bhp, but that may have been the difference in two runs, didnt do anything for the car except look nice.

Foam are easier to maintain than cotton! Just run the Pipercross filter under the tap, add a mild detergent, rinse, dry and refit - no oiling on Bosch MAF applications.

Plus with higher service intervals, you don't need to clean foam filters as often :)

K&N's need to be oiled to work. Too much oil and you will blame the filter for MAF failures (which still isn't proven to be the fault, I suspect overly fragile hot wires in the MAF or too much cold air burning the wire out).

Sealed intakes perform badly on most dyno's though - they can't get enough air from a couple of industrial fans.

Dyno cells work well though, Thorney Motorsport and Parr both get good results from theirs.

I've just stuck with a panel and pd160 intake on mine - does the job (filters air).

Hmm VAG aint used hot wire MAF's for about 8 or so years..lol

Really? :| What type are the Bosch ones in 1.8Ts?

I thought they all used this type?

Do they use a membrane inside then or something like in the newer slimline MAFs?

Aye, its not a hot wire though.

Its know as a hot film and in there lies the problem. Hot films give a much more accurate reading than hot wire but it has no burn off cycle. The older hot wire MAFs when the ignition is first turned on heats the wire up thus burning any crud off it. The Hot film cant to is so over time gets clogged up even after the filter.

Take the core out and have a look at one sometime, what you have is an air channel going through the sensor (little window at the bottom one side and at the top on the other) the air passes through this channel and over the hot film.

Hi

I have a Pipercross one on my car

I got better fuel consumption and got a bit of sound on my little Fabia

I have done 40k miles this year and I would be replacing my air filter every 20k miles

We sell the filter for £28.00 + VAT and when you are looking at £10.00 + VAT ish per filter mmm I thing another 20k miles and the filter has paid for itself , and that is without the extra fuel economy I got

The Pipercross one is not oiled and a quick wash in the sink with a touch of Fairy and there you go

I do also sell the K & N ones and as the Green and the K&N ones are the same stuff we have everything covered

The Mk2 vRS filters are on offer at the mo too at £28.00 incl VAT

Ah I see :)

The only ones I've dissected were on my C20XE

The one on my old TDI 110 looked like hot wire as when i took it apart to clean it there was what looked like a very fine platinum (or something) wire that was cleaned off.
