Roof boxes noob

Featured Replies

Due to a upcoming camping trip i am thinking about a roof box for the octavia

know i don't know a thing about other than they go on the roof and you put stuff in them

so any help, recommendation's, etc is welcome

don't do it !!!!!!! You'll burn fuel like a V8 towing a house. You sure you can't fit everything in the boot ? Octy boot's are massive.

well there's me, her, and 2 kids

when me and her went last year it was ok but this year is gonna be more gear so i didn't think it would all fit

You'll need a set of roof bars first. Don't think I've come across any boxes with them built in / direct fit.

I researched this quite heavily 18 months ago, so feel free to ask anything. For the mean time:

We got the biggest roofbox Halfords sell for cars. Essential with a large dog in the boot.

Halfords "own" brand are made by one of the other manufacturers and are practically identical. Get one with twin locks.

The grey/silver carbon effect one was a lot cheaper than plain black when we got ours (no idea why)

Dont bother with ebay etc. People were buying used ones for nearly as much as Halfords sell them for.

I dont agree with the MPG comments. On a trip to Cumbria we had 4 adults + 30kg dog + full roof box and still managed mid 30's MPG.

Edited to add; DO NOT open the sunroof with a roof box in place. I heard a story of someone that did this, disturbed the air flow around the box and ripper it clean off the car, depositing contents over the motorway.

 I can't get mid 30s with a clean vRS

me neither unless its under 70 mph all the way

The reason I said mpg would suffer it because when I borrowed my dad's roof box when we were moving house, I was strugging to get above 28mpg on avg.

MPG may possible vary depending on the car and box. It is possible that mine maintained a good MPG because its an estate  *clutches at straws*

Mine's and estate.... Goochie is your's re-mapped ?

Yep. Jabba custom remap.

150bhp to 212bhp in one easy step

(Its an Elegance FWD)

Could be your custom map is working in your favor regards fuel efficiency

That could also be true.

I bought a roofbox and mounting bars from The Roof Box Company. They also sell plastic boot liners. I received excellent service and advice from them.

If you have the hatchback go for a full width box rather than a Ski box. I borrowed my dads ski box then realised I couldnt open the boot all the way. I still managed to get over 30mpg with it on, I also used it when moving house. Why hire a van, everything can be moved by an octavia.

Ive used several roof boxes on different cars without problems.

Thule are good, but Halfords stuff or The Roofbox Company as mentioned above are equally respected..

I would buy as big as you can afford - you can always find a requirement for more room when you are going camping.

With regard to mpg - it can drop a bit - but lets say you were going to spend £100 on fuel and as a worst case scenario the mpg went down 20% - thats another £20 which on top of the cost of even a camping holiday is pretty much peanuts.

One other thing to consider is that some places will hire out a roof box. If you are going to camp regularly they are a good investment - if its a one-off renting is worth considering if there is anywhere local
