New car price quote-competitive?

Featured Replies

Hi I am considering taking the plunge and buying a brand new Octavia 1.6 Ambiente hb. I have had a quote for this model, including metallic paint, of

That's basically list price.

That doesn't necessarily make it a bad deal if the dealer is giving you a very good trade in for your old car but that doesn't sound like it's the case here.

and then you can see exactly what your car should be worth.

When you get to the point of discussing your trade in they will almost certainly ask you if you have an idea what your car is worth. This is them hoping you will say a nice low figure , at which point they will agree with it or go a bit under , so don't tell them but ask them to look at your car and tell you what it's worth. Make sure you have cleaned it inside and out first and when they go to look at it go with them and point out what good condition it's in (assuming it's not a wreck) and get them to agree.

Once they have given you a figure for your car , then produce your printout and explain what you think it's worth and why , reminding them that they agreed it's tidy. A focus that they can sell on for 6 or 7k is a nice car to take in part-ex as they'll sell it on at a profit nice and quickly.

Brokers like Broadspeed or Drive the Deal will do that model of octavia for a grand less and there are plenty of dealers that will do you decent discounts on new Skodas , so get some printouts from various websites to use as evidence and then go round a few other dealers and see what they will offer.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter if they offer you a discount on the new car or a better trade in - you just want a better price to change than the figure you have now.

If you are genuinely serious about buying the car now let the dealer know that you are prepared to buy then and there , but only at the right price and that there are plenty of other places you can go to. There's nothing wrong with slightly exaggerating the deal you have been offered elsewhere , but make it believable. If you use unrealistic figures they A) won't believe you , and B) won't be able to match it.
