Service due, surely not!!

Featured Replies

My 2004 mk1 vRS was serviced in July 06 @18491 mls, given 20k service + long life oil, service book stamped as next sevice 38k. Car has now done 27k (mainly motorway/dual carriageway driving), but service indicator is now showing as due in 1000 miles! Does this sound as though service interval has been reset (10k interval) incorrectly?, or could there be another problem? :( Car is still under warranty. Will be contacting offending dealer later today.

Thats because it nearly 10000 since your last service :)

 Excuse me!!!

The computer is set to 10,000  Longlife oil or no longlife oil!!

Sounds like it has been reset using the dash buttons, which will automatically put it on fixed. To reset on variable the diagnostic equipment needs to be plugged in.

The Fabia might be.. The octy isn't!

As above, it really needs checking with VAG-COM or similar to see what service interval it was set for at the last service.

Just change the oil, reset the service light and it'll stay out for another 10k miles ;)

It'll cost

its no longer on variable servicing.

someone, somewhere, has reset it manually, or used the diagnostic computer wrong.

afaik once its set onto fixed, you cant change it back :(

if you can someone let me know, because i principally drive longish journeys, totalling about 18k a year. this means a 10k service bill roughly every 9 months!

IIRC you can go from one to the other and back.

Won't be any problem at all if you had long life oil used, just means this one will be a short oil change that's all.

Sounds exactly like what happened to mine - variable serviced at 19400 by previous owner, requested service again at 28000 ish.

I checked with Vag-com and it was DEFINATELY all set for variable!

Didn't fancy paying

Remember if the dash is reset by the buttons it DOESNT recode the dash so if you check it with VAG COM it will still show as being set on variable despite showing at 10k.

And you can change back and forwards as much as you like as long as the correct oil is used.

if you REALLY want to leave it 20K between services, why not just reset the service indicator at 10K and wait for it to come on again 10K later..? :)

Either the car needs servicing at 10K or it doesn't, the indicator doesnt "make it need servicing"..

Personally i see leaving it 20K between oil changes is madness, but that's me, I use my car quite hard so prefer to change oil at 6K for the sake of £30.

On a serious note, what would be the difference be between a 10K service and a 20Kish variable? I don't really understand the whole variable thing - seems more like "neglect schedule" than "service schedule"..

Been on to Stealer, have to take car in for service indicator to be reset via VagCom, their error when resetting. As an engineer I have no problem in staying with the variable service schedule, dont forget that your gearbox oil is hardly ever changed over the life of the car and that has a hard life too!, same applies to rear axles on rear wheel drive veghicles. Dont forget that that the engine is set up for long life oil/variable servicing, car manufacturers wouldnt go down this route if there was any doubt as to its viablity, think it is one of the Cadillacs that had the engine sealed with the first oil change due at 100,000 miles:eek:

I have no issues with variable servicing. Most manufactures now use this system, modern oils, sensors and better tolerences in manufacture mean that 10k servicing is not really necessary anymore. The sensors in the engine monitor the condition of the oils, and its this that forms part of the trigger for the next service.

No problem with variables. Our Octy 110 tdi is on variable, averages 27000 between services, on 115 000 & still going fine
