Keeping EGR Valve Clean

I've recently had an EGR valve fail on my Furby at under 10,000 miles and replaced by Skoda.

Having taken a large pipe off the housing to the left of the EGR I noted a lot of carbon deposits inside and around on something that looks like a butterfly valve.

I managed to clean it using a spray of carb cleaner and a soft brush, letting it thoroughly dry before connecting it all up.

Is there anything I can do to prevent it carboning up to that extent in the future? Will using Millers Diesel additive help?

Either turn down the EGR operation with VAG COM or there are products available that will bypass the EGR system.

On the subject of EGR's

I took off the hose (big black rubber one) to the left of the EGR and it seemed to have a coating of what looked like dirty oil in it and on the inside of the valve- Is this normal for a TDi thats done 106K :confused:

If it needs to be kept clean i'm uggered!
