Not A Happy Chappy

Featured Replies

Went to garage today to have second foglight enabled by re-wire. Only when he rewired it so both lights came on the dash light came on to say i had a blown bulb. He tried everything to sort it. No Joy:mad:  . So he ended up wiring it so that i can disconnect and re-plug in the right side for when im in the UK. So i was happy with that:thumbup:.

The next problem ive been having is that every so often when i have the fan on in the car (both aircon and no aircon) i was getting a smell that seemed as if an old damp cloth had been put in the aircon somewhere. The guy checked the aircon system for 2 hours could not get the smell to repeat and also checked i had no fault codes (did but it was only from foglight which he cleared.). Anyhow on way back it started doing it again im well p***ed off as other than that ive been well impressed with the car.

Has anyone else had a similar problem to this or know of a solution

Cheers in advance

Carl

Hi; from what I have learnt in recent weeks your fog light problem is the CANBUS thinking you have the wrong bulb in, 'cos you have two, and calling a fault code. Your solution to a have a switch (or similar) so you use only one bulb at a time seems a good way around.

I have also heard though (I think) that if you get a VAGCOM unit you can reprogramme the CANBUS to be set for TWO foglight bulbs. Perhaps someone else can verify this.

Sorry to hear about the aircon - but I can't offer any info on this.

Good luck.

Cheers for reply.

VRSStu tried to enable it with VAGCOM but it didnt work option was there but even when ticked it didnt work so thats why ive had to have it done this way:mad:

Smell came back again on way home from work. Only lasts for about 3-4 mins but its annoying:mad:

Do you get a puddle of water under the car when the air con has run full chat for a while?

The musty smell could be a blocked drain pipe from the evaporator meaning the drip tray isn't draining properly hence stale water is present. It'll usually be at it's worst when you switch to ECON after running the A/C for a while.

i aint got dual zone just normal aircon and the car is brand new (well 3 weeks old)

so i cant see it being that.

Yes i do get a puddle of water after a while of it being on.

Gonna try and take it for a long run and see if its just cos ive been doing short journeys. May even be from when i put my car through the car wash which washed the underside of the vehicle so it may be from that. Got to use car washes in germany you aint allowed to wash it outside your home always give it a good polish afterwards tho:thumbup: so hopefully a good long run will clear it out

I'm getting the same smell as well, again not all the time too! Very puzzling

yeah, me too. It's not done it for a week or so, so it's probably unblocked itself!

Musty smells from the air con system are always due to water be it on the evaporator coil or in the drip tray, if there is any water left all the little bugs can multiply in the warm, damp environment, thats what causes the smell, once the evaporator and/or drip tray is dry the smell will generally go away.

The horrid smell is most apparant just after the compressor is switched off causing the evaporator coil to warm up while it is still damp. A blast of hot air across the coil usually does the trick.

Smells from aircon systems can be caused by bacteria in the vents, go to Halfords or similar and get an anti-bacterial spray which you put down the vents and then leave the aircon running with the car all closed up (and no-one in the car!) so it can circulate and clean the system up....we used to do this in cars that came into the Jepp delaership where I worked a couple of years ago
