How to repair deep deep Scratches!

Featured Replies

The car, when I purchased it, had a huge stone chip, which practically took a lot of paint away whilst denting it. Made it very noticeable indeed, so the first step was..

To rub down the deep scratch with '3000 grade' Sandpaper, very very fine covered in water.

Once that's done, apply some bodywork filler, and leave it to dry after smoothing it in as best you can, once it's nearer to drying properly, once again, give it another going over and filling it as smoothly as possible. This was slightly difficult as it was on a crease. Next was to prepare it for primer, which you can see in the next few pictures

Once it's completely dry, wet some 3000 grade sandpaper again, and wipe over the deep scratch too smooth of the filler, and match it too the shape of the existing bumper work, so you should get a finish such as ..

Don't worry about going too far over and away from the sratch with fine sandpaper, because it's soo fine, it can be polished out afterwards.

The next step, was too, apply masking tape too the obvious area's around the front of the car - badges/grills/lights/number plate etc. In this case, we went too the extreme, better to be safe, than sorry

After mixing up the paint, and applying the primer over the existing filler, it was time to put on a few base coats, then let them dry with close up infra-red lights.

Another few base coats, and more heating via infra-red ...

You've basically done a decent DIY bodyshop effort.

Fancy doing about every panel on my car? The areas that currently need doing are:

Boot lid - strip where Skoda badge usually is

Rear arch - inside arch and down the side a bit

Roof - Whole roof

Both wingmirrors

Bonnet could do with another coat....

Ok Ok Ok Ok Ok.... The title of this thread should of been.... If your not 100% sure what to do, call your mate who is a bodywork specialist :D LOL... Not too say I didn't help....

Good result though

Great job. Well done

Some bugger scratched my roof the other day - they must have rested something on it after getting out of their car in the space next to mine.

Grr.

Lovely job on the repair.

At least it is a flat red Rob. Just fill it with red paint and polish :)

Top notch!

How about a masterclass in doing stone chips?

Can you do the same over a smaller area using a touch-up pen?

If there minor, then just leave it. If they really bother you, then get a full respray.... But steer clear of using a touch up pen on ... stone chips. If there are too many stone chips, it will end up leaving it look blotchy.

Cracking job :) What did you polish it up with?

Looks spot on that mate:thumbup:
