I am in car buying mode & spent most of today going round local dealers looking at and test driving cars today (it's a hard life ). I have come up with a shortlist which at the moment consists of :

You wont be dissapointed with the vrs its just as fast as the golf and the seat and a lot cheaper. Its the best car ive owned and always try and go the longest way round to destinations just so i can spend as much time driving it as i can.
