My boss has a Peugeot 206CC. It's a 2003 model and has only done 13000 miles as she lives abroad a large part of the year. The gearbox started to play up last week and it ended up at the stealers. They have stripped the gearbox, and now say that it's not cost effective to repair and that a new gearbox is needed

They haven't been specific about the fault, but WTF - 13000 miles out of a gearbox!!

Seems a bit iffy. It's only used for short trips and she doesn't drive like me :D

Anyone have experience of a similar problem?

If it's got a service history (based on time not distance) try approaching Pug UK.

That said, I've never heard of a gearbox going that fast without a major manufacturing defect (or is it a clutchless manual?)
