Disconnecting the Wipers

Featured Replies

Hi!

My car=Fabia

searched trough the forum but couldn't find what I was looking for.

My question is:

How do I remove/disconnect the windscreen wipers?

I have removed the nut holding the wiper arm but still I cant remove it..

Should I Pull it of the axle or is there some other way of doing it?

I really need to get it off because I need to check the wiper engine/motor and the linkage, since the wipers stopped and now they are loose in that sence that I can move them by hand very easy and I can hear the motor working like it is not connected anymore to the wiperlinkage..

I know its a common fault on the skoda's that the linkages gets jammed but in this case they are not jammed .. they are loose but I can see the linkage arms(connected to the wiper motor/gearbox) moving when moving the wipers so something must have popped off it's place or something..

There is a definite knack to it. The spring that holds the blade arm to the windscreen actually knocks it off square. You need to push down slightly on the bit between the nut and where the wiper can pivot up so that it is square on , then you can lift the whole arm off.

Sorry, it's a crap explanation, but I know what I mean

The shaft the wiper arm fits onto has very fine splines to hold the arm securely in place and allow adjustment of the park position. There is a removal tool for levering the arm up off the shaft but failing that either pull straight up on the arm or use a tool (screwdriver?) to lever it up. I have seen both methods used.

Thanx guys.

I will try that, or actually I did. But now atleast I know that that is the way to do it :D

Thanks again..

If you can get hold of an old fashioned valve spring compressor (a bit like a G clamp with a fork that will fit behind the arm as you screw down on the nut) - very difficult to explain!

This is probably obvious but whatever you do, don't remove the nut completely before trying to get the arm off, just loosen it a few turns. Otherwise the arm will come of with a rush and either damage the paint or you! Once the arm is loose on it's splines you can remove the nut completely.

ah! thanks, smart idea.. will try to use some wd40 or whatever its called in your country before starting, and then knock on it gently(the axle) with an hammer or maybe even get that g-clamp, hmm.. think I've seen one in the toolbox in the office..

Thanx!

just a quick update..

I managed to remove the arms btw with a plier(u know the ones used for pipes and stuff)

It turned out to be so that a nut was loose that connected the wiper mechanism to the wiper-motor, this caused the splines to be worn out and after a while there was nothing to hold it in place and it stopped working.

I went to the nearest dealer and service point and asked if I could buy a new one or if this could be covered by the guarantee since it's clearly a factory fault that the nut got loose in the first place :-(

But the response I got was simply that the part could not be bought Or I had to but the whole wiper- engine and the mechanism together which would cost more than reasonable, for a fault that would never have occured if the nut had been tightened as it should in the factory. And the guarantee period was over since 3 months :( so they wouldn't replace it for free :thumbdwn:

BAH! what happened to customer service?

anyway, I called the local scrapheap and they will send me the mechanism for the third of the price that it would have cost to buy the whole kit from spare part dealer. :D

You wanna hear another thing that happened when I was about to start the troubleshooting?

Anyway here it goes:

There is a wire going from the handle inside the coup

I have seen several posts regarding wiper problems. I had the same, they kept stopping!! I trickled some oil down the wiper arm stub, just where it goes through bonnet.....PROBLEM SOLVED..maybe worth trying before taing the car to bits or replacing the wiper motor.
