Clunk when pulling off at about 15mph

Featured Replies

I've had my 1.8T auto for about a month now. I've noticed that when first pulling away after starting up, at about 15mph there's a bit of a clunk. Then it won't do it again until after parking up. Doesn't matter if the car is hot or cold, always there.

At first I thought it might be the gearbox, but its not as it happens independently to the change out of first.

It occured to the wife it might be something to do with the automatic central locking (which isn't enabled) ie an automatic bonet lock perhaps.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Jim.

The noise you hear could well be the ABS carrying out an automatic test procedure once the car has reached a speed of about 20kph. A pump noise may be audible for about 1 second during this check. Automatic self-locking makes an almighty noise as all 4 doors plus boot solenoids operate.

doesnt the diff or EDL do a self test when you first pull away as well ? or is this the same thing as the ABS test ?

Apparently its normal BTW.

Reckon it's the ABS....I think it's more of a "duuuur" noise. ;)

ABS for sure

I am getting a clunking noise at the mo if I get wheelspin in the snow. It will only do it as I pull off, and does it more if I am pulling out round a corner. Is this the EDL?

If this only when you get start of wheelspin? Is there a slight "jerk"/momentary loss of forward movement as it happens?

It is when it starts to wheelspin...dificult to say on the loss of forward movement, as it's wheelspinning...it has only ever done it in the snow.

Would say it's EDL....only works upto 25mph...IIRC.
