Do i read correctly that once its been fitted you will need to have the canbus re-coded by someone with vagcon to make it work?? Or if it will work will it only do certain things?? ie. not work with maxidot.

it will work without the recode but you may be carrying faults in the ecu. Mine locked the maxidot up twice after i fitted without the recode but i think the dealer recoded it for me on a visit sometime as when i got vag-com it was already programmed in.

you wont lose any functionality from not having the coding done but you should really look to get it changed in the long run.

Am i right when i say the MFD2 does not play MP3 disks and you cant play your ipod via the socket in the jumbo box as you lose the AUX in on the MFD2. My car is an 07 model.

If im right, playing mp3's is not possible on the MFD2 unless you use an FM transmitter?

If you fit it without recoding it appears to work perfectly okay (including maxidot) but it does record a couple of faults. Mines is fitted without recoding and is fantasitc .

From what I gather, these faults just flag up the fact that an MFD2 is fitted but hasn't been spec'd in the car configuration. They won't do any harm, other than confuse the garage at the next service when they run diagnostics.

Whenever you get a chance, the changes can be made via Vag-com to add the MFD2 / Sat Nav options to make the fault codes go away.

I've not tried anything through the AUX socket since fitting it, but it appears the MDF2 is compatible with an AUX socket (the option is available through a menu).

It doesn't play MP3s, and ideally it needs the navigation CD in all the actual MFD2 unit all the time.

As long as you've got the CD changer, playing CDs isn't a problem.

The workaround to play MP3s (although I don't know who's done this yet) is to fit a DVD player which will play both movies (on the MFD2 screen) and WMA / MP3s etc.

dont know the answer to that one 100%. I know the mfd2 has an aux in but im not sure if its compatible with the AUX socket as I have a 2006 build. I use a dension on mine which replaces the cd changer so FM isnt your only option. and no it doesnt support MP3 disks or id3 tags unfortunately :(

Its all down to the wiring in the 2007 model cars onwards. They use a different pin config which doesn't provide a good enough earth. Those pins that are changed have been done so to enable the AUX in from the jumbo box. You need to rearrange the plug/pin config slightly on the cars loom to address the issue which looses you the AUX in capability. I don't know if a later MFD2 from a 2007/2008 car would already have its internals configured for the 2007 wiring loom on the car, but for me, I'll live without the AUX in to have the MFD2 when I find the cash for one.

You can circumvent the AUX MFD2 issue by purchasing a VW A/V adaptor that plugs straight into the back of the unit.

I think you might be thinking of the early VW DVD units Ross. They wouldn't play music until the firmware was flashed to enable it. The CD MFD2 will play a music CD.

To try and answer some of the questions in the thread -

The MFD2 itself is not MP3 compatible. It is however AV compatible via a socket on the rear, for this you would need a suitable interface.

I am not currently aware of a way to make the built in Aux socket (Jumbo) to work with the MFD2. I have spoken to Skoda UK who don't seem able to answer me.

My dealer has an Octy II on order as a demo with SatNav so I intend to ask if I can have a rummage and see what's what.

Good luck with the rummage, there are an increasing number of AUX equipped Octavia's on here having the MFD2 treatment. I for one would like to know how to make the jumbo box socket work with the sat nav.

I am a bit suprised that you lose the facility to play mp3's as standard if you have the sat nav fitted, im not so botherd about it not playing mp3 cd's, but to not be able to plug my ipod in is putting me of the idea:thumbdwn: .

I tried the 1215 with this Belkin : Auto Kit for iPod w/ Dock Connector

and it picked the engine up.:thumbdwn: but I seem to remember it was OK without.

It is also possible to buy a kit to replace the cd changer with an ipod interface. Dension seem favourite.

However I prefer my solution, a Phatbox in plae of the cd changer.

The phatbox is ideal as it works well with the OEM headunits.

As was said above search ebay for suitable interfaces, as Ian eludes to you may also need a supressor.
