VW MFD now fitted

Featured Replies

Well, I've finally got my MFD screen fitted in my Superb, and what can I say....piece of *iss.

I was crapping myself at the prospect of fitting it, being as I am, a technophobe and luddite in one! Anyway, bit the bullet, read, re-read, and then read again VRStu's fitting guide from his Octy for reference, and went for it. Had to nip to the mighty Parkside Garage to get them to release the Symphony head unit, (I had no release keys, D'oh!). Anyway, Richard at Parkside was a true gentleman, very obliging and he 'popped' the unit out for me in seconds. Then it was back to work, (30 seconds down the road!), and got on with the job in hand. approx. 15 minutes later, hey presto! One MFD fitted, working and looking mighty fine. The difference it makes to the appearance of the dash is worth the investment alone.

As promised I have taken some piccies, but I am having difficulty in getting them into the body of this thread, (techniophobia strikes again!), but to be honest, VRStu's Octy guide worked perfectly for me, thanks Stu, but just in case there is a bigger technophobe than me, (not bloody likely mind!), I thought I'd take the pics for direct relation to the Superb.

Any help and advice on adding the pics would be very welcome, when I try to copy and paste them, they won't show up in the thread?

Anyway, until I sort it out, if anyone wants to see the pics, just PM me and I can email them to you.

Thank you very much to VRStu and Quentin for their help, assistance and guidnace in helping me to take the MFD plunge, above and beyond the call of duty, as usual from looking at other threads/posts etc. Thanks guys.

at the bottom of your post click "Manage attatchments". a new window will open allowing you to attach 5 images, once you have browsed for them all click upload and then close window. You pics should now be attached.

The guide for the Octy I was actually written by Jon - Much as I'd love to I can't take the credit :P

Glad you have it all sorted though. I'm sure there are a few questions -

Did you need a Plug & Play lead?

Do you have MaxiDot? Does it display Nav?

He must have had a Plug and Play lead otherwise he would have struggled to fit it?

The MaxiDot display will not display the Nav as the original wiring harness is not in the car as standard and therefore if retro fitting this into the Superb you loose this functionality.....correct?!?!?

Glad you fitted it OK mate but it must look odd being illuminated Blue and Red?

Sorry about that Stu. Thanks indeed to Jon for the Octy guide.

Thanks also to Baker21, great pre-purchase advice also.

Right, yes, I got a Plug & Play lead with the MFD, and it did exactly what it said on the tin!

Had to nip to Parkside Garage to get the Symphony head unit popped out as I had no radio keys, D'oh! Richard at Parkside sorted me out immediately, a true gent. Went strightback to work, 20 seconds down the road, and hey presto! approx. 10 mins later I'm all MFD'd up. Nice work fella!

At the moment I have lost the steering wheel stereo controls and Maxidot, but I'm sure I read about another harness/patch lead to re-enable the steering wheel controls, any advice welcome, (I've not lost cruise or the computer display though).

Granted, a Skoda unit would be ideal, but I'm really quite happy as the VW unit lights up all red, and it contrasts quite nicely with the red needles so it doesn't look that odd at all. At the end of the day though, I will probably keep my eyes open for a Skoda 'B' unit, and then Ebay this VW one. Just because I like things to be authentic!

For the recors, I purchased this unit from Ebay seller dj.kolia, very helpful, prompt service and great follow up, a bit dearer than buying from Lithuania or Poland, but in my opinion worth it for the UK Power Seller aspect.

Right, I'm going to have a go with a pic. Stand by your beds. Sorry about the quality of the pic. I'll try and take a better one. (picture courtesy of Nokia N95!).

I knew that - I was trying to clear up a few points for others who might read this at a later date and would want answers to the common questions.

As far as I am aware mate you won't be able to get these functions back....unless you have an Elegance Superb which comes with the wiring already in place as I have searched long and hard for this subject on various forums and not found anyone that has done it successfully but if you do come across something then please let us know.

Fair enough mate....just seemed a little obvious that you would need a Plug and Play lead and any reputable seller will include this harness in the sale of most at Nav units.

Looks good but shame about the illumination being orange, id like a cd/cd changer head unit but there all vw so can only get orange as well, anyone know of any after market units fit that are compatable with the steering controls and maxidot display

Thanks for that Baker21, I'll gladly bow to your knowledge on the subject. That said, though, I will keep my ear to the ground and let you know if I find anything, that's if you haven't sold your beauty by then. You must be mad! lol

ORANGE! ORANGE! - It's as red as a very red thing! lol. It really doesn't look out of place, it contrasts quite nicely, as the speedo and rev counter needles illuminate red anyway, along with the hazard warning switch and ambient lighting, it all kind of blends together nicely.

I'm pretty sure if the VAG group can't supply an OE MFD that works with steering wheel controls and Maxidot, as seems to be the case, then you have not got a prayer on the aftermarket. At least not without major wiring surgery.

I work for Peugeot, and if you retro fit any stereo to any Peugeot with remote stero controls, then you lose the remote and there is nothing you can do about it. You also lose your dash top display, (where fitted), so a very similar scenario to VAG group cars in that respect.

Keeping it now mate for the mean time as I have now bought some other wheels, tax, MOT and serviced it for a while longer...

Fortuantely, that's were the similarity between the two marques starts and ends, bloody French cars! Not for me anymore thank you!

LOL!!!

Id like to agree with you there "but", it is well know that Peugeots are crap, my wife thinks there great and has had a 205, 106 diesel and has now got a 1.4 306, there the only cars she's ever had and the only problem she's had in 14 years of driving except normal wear and tear is the electronic dash on her 306 packed up and she had to have a new consol fitted! This make it hard to argue the point there crap when my Superb has been back to Skoda 5 times in less than a year and has been there for the last week due to its second bout of water ingression!!!!!

Ah!, now your talking about the older Peugeot range, that's quite a different kettle of fish.
