Oil Change

Featured Replies

I am about to do an oil change for the first time on my Fabia 1.9 TDI (74 bhp)/2003 model. Will I need any special tools? Any tips?

You might well need a filter wrench (aka spider, chain or strap wrench) to get the old filter off.

Proceed in this order:-

1) remove sump drain plug.

2) remove filler cap.

3) change filter, smearing rubber gasket on new one with oil before screwing it up hand-tight only.

4) do any other jobs you're doing at the same time.

5) replace the sump drain plug. I'm not being facecious here; even professional mechanics have been known to forget this.

6) refill oil to dipstick mark, or with recommended capacity if the stick goes through the filler cap.

7) run engine and idle for a few seconds. Leave for 20 minutes, and then recheck the oil level. Don't worry if it needs topping up; the difference is now in the filter and upper distribution galleries.

Just another quick point about removing the old oil filter.

If it is inclined with the opening lower than the rear of the filter (don't know about the Fabia), then you will end up with oil flowing out of the filter and over the engine casings which can be difficult to mop up.

Instead, pack the area beneath the filter with plenty of kitchen roll and then once you have loosened the filter enough to unscrew it by hand, but not enough to let any oil flow out, place a sandwich bag over the filter and carefully unsrew it from the threads and quickly lift the bag so as to catch the filter and prevent any further spillage.

Remove the kitchen roll paper and you should, with any luck, be left with a still clean engine bay!
