If it starts squealing when the a/c is switched on i'd put a tenner on the fan being knackered. Changed loads on the Audi A6 and the Passat, did a few on Superbs as well.

Worth checking the bonnet cable hasnt slipped down under the inlet trunking, sometimes they do and rub on the fan.

still makes the noise with a/c switched off. bonnet cable is well clear.

funny thing went down the road this morning and it rattled so i switched of the engine and free wheeled for a while and i am sure i heard it rattle again. me thinks its not engine related.

got a ramp at work so gonna put it up on that on tuesday and take of the undeshield to see if the exhaust shield is catching a little.

hope i'm not just clutching at straws though.
