Creaking Steering Column/Trim/WTF!

Featured Replies

My 2003 Superb 1.9TDi 130 has a creak/knocking noise, that seems to be coming from in or around the steering column. I had the car on a ramp yesterday to check the anti roll bars, bushes and wheel bearings, and everything mechanical seems absolutely fine.

I've still got some used car warranty on the car, but I do like to try and pinpoint things like this myself, (I know how long garages can keep cars off the road trying to locate mysterious noises).

It's not a pronounced noise, and it only does it when turning, and seemingly only at low/parking speeds. It doesn't do it when turning lock to lock if stationary.

Pehaps it's one of those annoyances that require you to turn the radio up a little bit more, but I would like to get to the bottom of it.

If nobody is forth coming, then my next step is to strip the cowls of the steeirng column and have a butchers under there.

Any ideas guys and girls?

Ahha, another owner, who has a similar problem to me!!!

It only happens to me early morning and late at night, and its more of a squeek, but only when the steering wheel is even a degree right of centre. If it is dead centre of turning left, but turn it a little to the right and the sqeek appears....WEIRD!!!

Ah! So at least I know I'm not going mad! Well I might be actually, but you know what I mean. LOL

Let's see if anyone can help us out. In the meantime if I get enlightenment from any other source i will naturally post it up.

I had this on my former Toledo, just changed the position of the steering wheel and it went quiet, long shot, but might work for you.

Nah! Tried that. Thanks anyway. I've tried it in various positions, and it does't make any difference, not too mine anyway. Cheers

Mine seems to have developed a slight creak now....grrrr

I've been a bit busy the last few days, but I'm hopefully going to take the cowls off the steering column over this weeknd. If nothing's obvious, then I'll leave the cowls off for a few days while I drive around. Might have to get SWMBO on her knees in my footwell, (stop it now!), and have a listen for it. lol

:P
