tuning 1.6 engine?

Featured Replies

hello people,

im planning to eventually put a 1.6 engine into my favorit, but want to know what option are easy to make it a bit more ummpffy!

also anyone recomend a good set of brakes?

Well i know that Superchips do a chip for the 1.6 Felicia engine but its not worth it. It costs about 500 quid and gives you 8bhp. Thats all i really know tbh. I presume with the ECU you can remap etc but without a turbo on a 1.6 felicia engine im not sure how it works.

A cam change might help but do not expect much return...

Len, From what i understand (my dad had 5 felicias) there is not much you can do with the 1.6 felicia lump is there ?????

That 8 horses also means the use of 98 (well99 then) RON fuel as well. Why not try and find a Polo GTI/Lupo GTI 1.6 16v, it has 125PS and can be brought up to 150PS. The 5 speed box is useless though so a Lupo 6 speed would be best. I have regularly got 100PS from the AEE though without too much effort.

cheers guys, im not really after shocking performance, im just after a engine thats smoother than the favy lump, and goes when i want it to.

any problems to look out for on the 1.6 lump?

getting a low mile one. Garage we use say 1.6 felicias are getting rarer and rarer.

my dads would hit 60 in 10 seconds and go onto 115 mph (well thats what the road angel said)

Look at Teflon Tom's thread for inspiration :)

Right. The 1.6 "felicia" engine is the AEE VW engine found in the 6N polo amongst other vehciles. It can be tuned by fitting all the breathing mods, filter, exhaust, tubular 4-1 manifold etc - all those parts are available, also available are 42mm throttle bodies, high lift cam and custom mapped ecu along with uprated pistons, valve springs etc This will give up to 140bhp, you wont get anymore unless you turbo/supercharge. - obviously all that will cost a fair few grand and arguably not worth it,

The only engines that will easily fit in the Felicia/Favorit, and I say easily are the 1289cc skoda derived 135/136 engines and the 1.6 unit. No other unit, VW or otherwise will be a "drop in" conversion. A considerable amount of work is required such as custom engine mounts, driveshafts etc. Even if you could fit a bigger engine you would need uprated brakes aswell, like a 280mm conversion, which again, isnt straight forward on the favorit/felicia as these are skoda not vw derived brakes.

The best thing to do really is tune the 1289cc lump. The 1289cc is all alloy, the 1.6 is a heavy iron block, so you will upset the handling a little on a favorit by dropping that engine in. You can get around 130bhp from the 1289cc engine anyway. Either junk the injection system and use some twin 38 or 40 DCOE carbs depending on how you want to drive it or you could stick with the injection system and get it throttle bodied, would need custom ecu/rolling road though, and finally, the last alternative would be to fit the Fabia 1400cc engine which is the last evolution of the skoda 136 engine, 75bhp stock (same as 1.6) and then throttle body it to the tune of 140bhp - bear in mind this is also not a "drop in" conversion, it requires a custom engine mount and adaptation of the water pump, as the stock favorit one gets in the way.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

thanks for the information , its very helpful, cheers

where would i be ale to get the throttle bodies?

Why not try and find a Polo GTI/Lupo GTI 1.6 16v

dont even go there... not impossible, but it aint gonna be cheap

sorry, i nearly died laughing when i read that

here's a pic for inspiration, the most difficult part to source is the manifold for the throttle bodies, try dbilas dynamic or sorg motorsport in germany. only real weak point in these is the conrods

- bear in mind this is also not a "drop in" conversion, it requires a custom engine mount and adaptation of the water pump, as the stock favorit one gets in the way.

not if you use the 1.6 felicia engine mountings/brackets:)

also anyone recomend a good set of brakes?

it just so happens that i'm in the process of doing that;)

coming soon... rear disc conversion:eek:

any questions, just ask... although i'm working funny hours at the moment so it may take me a while to get back to you

You could also consider the 305-mm (4x100 M12) disc from the Ibiza Cupra with those calipers and extend the design of your adapters to suit. These will fit inside 16” wheels with the Brembo caliper.

yeah, those wilwood calipers dont work very well on discs that big, and the brembo calipers are really expensive
