Fault codes 16684 and 16687

Featured Replies

Hey Guys,

problem with the VRS on the way home last night.

Limped home and got:

16684 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected

and

16687 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected

Can't get the guy I know on the phone.

Am I right in thinking it's probably a coil pack gone on Cylinder 3?

It's the Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected that has be a bit worried.

Also, with that fault, what sort of mileage will start doing it damage?

I'm 20 miles away from the garage I know. That going to feck up my CAT or anything?

thanks,

Stephenc

Is there a strong smell of petrol outside the car when it is idleing? I had a coil pack go once, and it gave off a strong smell of petrol, and the engine was rocking around the engine bay a bit.

If you have breakdown cover, get it towed to the garage - this will prevent any cat damage. It might be fine to drive, but I wouldn't want to be the one to tell you to do that.

I checked the fault codes with Ross Tech:

Hey,

I did get the smell of petrol on the way home alright, like a sulphurish smell.

I might swap out the coil pack myself - found some decent posts on it.

If the coil pack doesn't do it, I'll get it towed to a garage,

The Random misfire thing had me worried for a while, but as the coil pack is not uncommon, I'll try that first and see if it helps,

thanks,

Stephen.
