I've read it and decided to stick to what he says ie 3000rpm for the first 1k etc.

Anyone here stuck to this or agree disagree ?

I drove mine gently for a few hundred miles and then gradually increased the amount I caned it up to 1k. Totally normal after that.

It's used half a litre of oil in 11,000 miles as a result.

MY previous 2.0TDI was run in VERY gently and the thing used to drink about 3 litres/10k.

Back in July I bought a 1 yr old Elegance 1.9TDi with 14k on the clock. Previous owner was a lease company and new front tyres had been fitted. Draw your own conclusions about how gently this has been run in!!

BUT

In 4k mile it has used no oil and it has averaged over 50mpg.

I generally drive fairly sedately but on the odd occasion where I have floored the throttle and hit the red line I have never seen any smoke out the back.

I ran mine in following the HJ method almost religiously, and to be honest mine probably uses more oil than the average (about 1 litre per 10k miles). And I've never been able to get consumption figures as good as some on here.

Then again after nearly 60k, it still seems tight as a drum! Another 60k might be when the benefits (or lack of) of running in 'progressively' start to show - until then, it's one of many possible causes of my higher-than-average oil and fuel consumption...

Except I'll use miles so 3000rpm for the first 1k miles then gradually build up over the next 1500 miles for a running in period of 2500miles.

If thats what they recomend in the manual then it must be right ? Right ? :-)

I've always run my cars in as I would normally drive them; just keeping them away from the red line though for the first 500 or so miles if Im in a 'foot to the floor' mood. Ive always found oil consumption to be better on my cars compared to friends cars that have been ultra caringly run in!

Ive never had an issue with an engine and iirc I read that the seals/rings tend to settle in better if the car is pushed harder from new.

I'd not worry too much about running in, especially considering how the cars will have been driven before you pick them up. I'd just drive it as you'd normally drive (using all the available revs) and you'll find it uses hardly any oil :D

I bought an ex Skoda repmobile (Superb PD diesel) which would not have been kindly run in. The original oil also stayed in the engine for 21k miles. I have run it for another 10k miles and have just changed the oil (507.00) - it had needed no topping up, although the dealer overfilled it as usual.

I thing VAG do have a running in problem. In order to appeal to the fleet market's requirement for long service intervals, the engines are factory filled with fully synth oil. This will mean that the rings may not bed if the engine is run in too gently.

Let mine warm up and drive as normal from day one. No problems and not lost a drop of oil as yet.

Once the engine's warm, drive it like you stole it.

Over the years I have come to the conclusion that "running it in gentle" just ends up with a performance reduction

and increased oil consumption :)

2000 miles on mine now, (just over) it's had a little sip of oil and has been driven "normally" since it rolled off the dealers forecourt. Normally is spelt "driveitlikeyoustoleit" btw. All I am careful about is allowing it to warm up before stressing it, and allowing it to cool after a good run before shutting it down.
