2003 Superb Boot Lock Won't Lock?

Has anyone had any problems with the boot trunck lock on their Superb's? Mine has seemed a bit dodgy for a while now, ie: sometimes it didn't catch, got back in car and display was showning the boot as open. Had to get back out and shut it again, but on the whole it was fine.

Then this afternoon, got back too car, opened boot from fob no problem, put SWMBO's bags in the boot, shut it, got in car and display said boot was open, got out, shut it again, got in......same thing! Got back out, SLAMMED it, got back in...........same bloody thing!!

No matter what I tried it simply would not 'catch'

I got home and stripped the trim on the inside of the boot lid, but there really is not anything to see, just a couple of Torx bolts, an electrical connector plug and a locking rod.

What I have noticed is that the lock catch is as floppy as a.......................well, a floppy thing really, so I really do think that the lock mechanism has topped itself!

Has anyone had anything similar, and was it the lock mech that you changed? I'm going to have to try and sort it on Saturday morning as I'm playing golf in the afternoon and need it secure for then!

I've had this problem in reverse and the cause might be the same in your case.

My boot wouldn't unlock or open electrically (using any method) although it would rather stiffly with the key. The cause was a tight pivot in the mechanism.

If you remove the boot trim (screws in "handholds" and behind triangle) you can see the actuator which pulls on the latch via a bowden cable. The key barrel acts half way along it.

On my car, the stiff pivot was the one for the lever at the latch that the bowden pulls on - find the lock end of the bowden and the pivot for this lever is the stiff one.

One drop of oil provided an instant cure - and the fault has never come back. As with the boot hinge pivots, I think VAG bang their rivets too hard.

Cheers Roto. I'll have a look at that in the morning, but like I said, the catch in the lock mechanism feels really loose, and hte boot simply will not shut, it's as if something has 'gone' inside the lock mech itself?

Try this, use the key in the boot lock a few times and also the one in the door bucket, might free off something WABOL.

Sorted it on Saturday morning. Rang my local dealer for price on a boot lock mechanism, only cheap but they didn't have one! Rang another dealer, same thing. Bit the bullet, (as I had the part number), and rang local VW dealer. They had stock and it only cost me just over £14 with a bit of trade discount!

Shot home, stuck it in, (simplicity itself), changed the fuse I popped when I flicked the bulb out of the boot light to save the battery when the boot would not shut! (only realised this when the central locking, interior lights and all 4 windows would not work! Fuse is No.14 for the record!)

The part number, just in case anyone was wondering is; 3B5 827 505 M.

Hey presto! Back to normal.
