spongy brakes after fitting new front pads

Featured Replies

Just replaced front pads on my Octavia. Went OK apart from the wear indicator cable. Brakes are working OK as the discs are hot after repeated braking but the pedal is spongy, rather more than before I reckon. Is there a reason for this. Does it take a while for the pads to bed in?

Thanks for any suggestions

Could need bedding in. Did you undo the resevior cap on fitting the new brake pads ?

Air could have got in the system.

Yes pads do take a while to bed in, especially if the discs were not replaced. The groove pattern (and there always is one, even if the discs look reasonably smooth) has to transfer itself from the discs to the pads. Also the new surface of the pads will not be quite as grippy until it's worn down a little.

Did you lose any fluid when you replaced the pads? Did you check the level in the reservoir? Usually it will increase rather than decrease, but it could have overflowed and potentially syphoned some fluid off.

Most pads have a bedding in procedure - usually just involves gentle use for the first 500 miles or so (varies depending on pad type).

Thanks for that, there was no fluid loss that I can detect, certainly non came from reservoir. Will see how things are after a few days of driving
