Laptop help - screen intermittent fault

Featured Replies

Bought a second hand Acer Travelmate 2410 from my neighbour and after around 2 months the LCD screen developed a fault. The laptop had never been dropped and hardly used, hence a good deal. The fault is when you turn on the laptop, the screen basically doesn't light up and although you can see a feint image, it is too dark to use. After a while, repeatedly opening and closing the screen, eventually gets it working right. It doesn't stay on however and I would guess that every 30 seconds or so, the screen goes dark again and you have to go back to readily opening and closing the screen. Any ideas as the cause or a possible remedy? I have found new screens on ebay for £80 or so, but I don't want to spend a fortune on repairs.

Yup... would definately try the inverter first.

I had a HP laptop a while ago that was squeeling and flickering backlight on the display so i sent it off for repair under warranty and it was the inverter that they changed.

Did some research last night and my conclusion was the inverter, but wanted some Briskodian advice. Ordered one today from Ebay and will hopefully work fine

Yes a faulty inverter is likely.

Less likely is that the connections between the laptop body and screen have broken. Sometimes this can happen after time just with the mechanical stress of opening and shutting the lid. Not so common now.
