Mmmm - autodrying brakes - any probs?

Driving home this afternoon I think the auto brake drying function of the Scout may have got a tad excited on the rural roads. Was very heavy showers/sleeting with many large, deep puddles regularly on the road for about 8 miles.

All this "fording" meant that when slowing down to enter a village there was a cyclical metallic "woosh-woosh-woosh" noise that was related to the vehicle speed. Reminded me of when I had a sticky caliper on a car back when I was a student.

Got home and checked the discs. All four brake discs where roasting hot (not just warm) to the touch.:thumbdwn: Makes me think the brake drying wipe may have been occuring too often in a short period of time or the sensors have remained wet even through the discs were dry.

Anyone else experienced this? Just hope they cool back straight rather than warped........

Might be worth going to the dealers to see if any fault codes were logged.

Learn something new every day, didnt realise any Octavia had auto drying brakes...........

If it has the brake drying system it's logical that it would be connected to the ever temperamental rain sensor.

TBH I didn't know such technology was available on the Octavia - evey day is a school day.

I think it might be Scout only. Gets mentioned in a few reviews such as this one.

On the plus side the brakes seemed smooth and fine today so I think I got away with it. Still brakes smoothly with zero hint of "judder" which would have indicated warping. Phew!!

I would be guessing that the sensors must be in and around the hubs somewhere as you could theoretically go fording without getting the windscreen particularly wet, but thats just a guess. It apparently operates through the ABS system (somehow!?!).

Not sure it is that as the 288mm set up that is soon to be replaced on my Octy gets roasting hot to the exten you could feel the heat from outside the wheel :eek:

depending on how you drive the car really but i find my brakes are always hot afetr a half decent run. and as the discs meets the alloys, the heat simply disperses to them.

the discs can take temps way beyond what you could (or want) to reach out and touch :)

It wasn't so much the heat, it was the fact that the discs temporarlily sounded like they were rubbing on the pads/caliper after driving through lots of big puddles. I wasn't braking at the time, just naturally slowing.

I appreciate that on a good XC blast you can get the heat up on your own without electronic assistance:rolleyes:. It's just that the weather wasn't suitable for that yesterday!

Unless the noise I was hearing was the auto drying cycle "pressing" the grit and dirt in the puddle water into the disc?

Whatever it was it didn't sound pleasant, and thankfully hasn't reoccured today!
