Tyre Noise

Featured Replies

I have an Octavia L&K hatch on Dunlop port SP 01A tyres- the high frequency tyre noise is apalling. Has anyone changed to Michelin Primacy HP with beneficial results?

My 1.9TDi Elegance was very noisy on the original Bridgestone Turanzas. Its much better on the Michelin Primacys. I don't know how the Dunlops compare to either though.

The Michelin Primacy's ought to be quieter than your Dunlops but from personal experience (having used Primacys) they are not the quietest with Michelin Pilot Exalto 2s being better.

What size tyres are you running? I may be able to suggest some other alternatives.

many thanks barnstormer. I am using 205/55/16/v tyres on alloys.

Regarding Bridgestone turanza tyre, our a5 was fitted from new with these and we have just replaced them having done 23000 miles on them. Towards the end of their life they seem to get noisey ,now having new ones we noticed straight away that they were quiter. However a further 1000miles on and the old noise is back. Our region has very bad road surfaces so you are not aware of differant tyre noises until you get on smooth tarmac etc.

New tyres are always quieter as they have more noise absorbing rubber in the tread.

There is a lot of info on this subject already in earlier posts and threads.

Until the DOT put down proper road surfaces I do not think we are ever going to solve this problem of tire roar.

OK have a read of this;-

The Total Tyre Guide | Total Tyre Guide | Products | Auto Express

A very comprehensive report for tyres of a near identical size (215/55 16) to yours and therefore comparable make/model etc. Its interesting reading and hopefully will help (rather than confuse) you.

Remember that tyre noise is really only a minor factor in the overall performance of a tyre. Personally I want the best performing tyre for grip, handling balance etc and have got Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas on my car; but they happen to be the noisiest in their group!

PS> My comments on Michelins were based on 45 and 40 profile tyres and therefore not truly comparable for you (with 55 profile).

I think it is quite a common problem with the Octy - I've had some level of tyre noise with both Conti Sport 2s and Vredesteins although I wouldn't say it was excessive and bothered me particularly.
