On which car with what engine?

If it's a derv then personally I'd just stick to OEM filters and change them every 10k as opposed to the suggested 40 or 60k miles.

Petrol it depends on the engine, but keeping the OEM filter and changing it more often is certainly a good first step.

Often the filter itself isn't the main issue it's the restrictions from pipes and the box itself.

When I fitted a Pipercross to my PD140 the pickup definately seemed smoother - the OEM filter I took out had only done about 4k miles and was not very dirty.

I use an ABD cold air intake coupled to a universal K&N filter - 12" x 8" cone which is mounted out of sigh behind the bumper.....

Cold air intakes (Carbino, ABD etc.) are good and they keep the noise down too. A replacement Green, Jetex, or K&N panel filter is also another very worthwhile upgrade option, especially if you want to keep the standard look of your vRS.

yeh sorry its for the 1.8T octavia 180bhp, the prices varies from 150 to 250 i was just wondering is it worth spending like 250 on a pipercross VIS when the cabonio is around 160 an it does the car better. whats your recomendations, also while im here can any one tell me how far would you go to sensabily modify my octy before things start going wrong and being unreliable.

I would personally have a look at the air intake pipe and if it narrows at any point replace it with a wide bore pipe from the airbox to the intake at the front.

You could also try smoothing off the inside of the airbox and putting silicon dielectric grease onto the MAF contacts. (Search `cage mod`on here).

Also check how dirty your OEM filter is and either replace it with a new one or if you really fancy it put in a panel filter such as green cotton etc.

That lot should set you back from free or £4 for just the grease to probably £75 maximum for all of it with a "performance" panel filter.

I'd say that spending £75 on this and then putting the remaining money from your £250 towards an exhaust or other mods would gain you a lot more than a CAI etc.

Also the CAI carries a small but not insignificant risk of taking in water which would obviously be very bad in any quantity.

Hope that helps.
