Driver's door mirror

Featured Replies

Some unspeakable bar steward has knocked my driver's side door mirror off. The top, body coloured, moulding is broken and the indicator housing has had it. The mirror tilts ok and the heating element is still working.

Is the outer shell a replacement item and about how much of an arm and a leg is it if it is?

The indicator housing and the black part next to it are one piece, not too bad interms of cost (something like £29) IIRC but make sure it's the right one as they can come with or without a puddle lamp. It's a reasonable DIY job too.

As for the outer shell, the colour coded part means a spray up jobbie unless you can source one from another Octavia II or a late VW Polo in a scrapper. Again, replacing it is a 2 minute DIY job.

did the polos ever come with puddle lamps?

Not to my knowledge, the Polo comment was aimed at the colour coded outer shell. I just went straight to the dealer for the LED repeater unit.

The LED unit is not wired into the door though is it? I thought it connected to a small bit in the mirror for the puddle item and the indicator was to the car.

Don't suppose anyone has any internal pics of the wiring do they?

Thanks all.

As my mirror is now broken I will photograph the internals and place them on here. ( The pictures that is.):)

This might clear things up a little:

It's the most recycled image ever but it shows the internal wiring.

There are three wires to the LED unit fitted with a puddle lamp (red, white and black). Or 2 wires for a non Puddle lamp unit (see image below)

The red and black wires from the puddle lamp plug into the LED unit via a small square white 2 pin plug.

The bottom of the mirror is one piece, the clear plastic indicator lens is bonded to the black plastic part that covers the rest of the mirror underside, this is held on with 2 Torx screws, one undone the bottom just comes off.

I've got a similar problem - smashed indicator repeater. But the top cover is intact fortunately. I thought it would be easy to replace but can't get the top cover off.

Can anyone tell me how this can be done without breaking the top cover?

If it's like the Fabia, you have to remove the mirror ( a none too gentle pull should do it ) and there are 2 torx screws holding the back cover in place.

HTH.
