More BHP, more torque, more mileage... less CO

Featured Replies

A Swedish company has presented a diesel-to-ethanol (95 %) converted Saab 9-3 1.9TiD:

World news from BSR - BSR News

BHP up from 150 to 195. Torque 302 lb/ft. Mileage >56 mpg  and when running on bioethanol practically no net emissions of CO.

Interesting that the diesel engine gets more miles out of ethanol (compared to oil) while it's the other way around with petrol engines.

No one cares about Carbon Monoxide anymore though ;)

True, as can be seen on this pic from sunny Wiltshire the roads are still perfectly dry :D

I may have misunderstood/misread something, but isn't the production of bioethanol quite an un-Green process?

Sadly there's a lot in what you say. It depends on how it's done, and how the raw stuff is produced. If produced in a sensible way it would probably not be enough of it.

The good thing with experiments and prototypes is that new routes are tried out. There's dimethyl ether for instance that closely resembles ethanol, and at least here in Sweden we should be able to produce large volumes of it from waste products at paper mills.

China's oil consumption is 7 quadrillion (million billion) barrels a day, of which almost half is imported, and that figure is rising... so sooner or later we'll have to find alternatives. Or buy pushbikes.

Or nuke China.

Now THAT would lead to hazardous emissions...

Well, obviously you'd leave the Chinese there... ;)

Can we not pick somewhere else to nuke? China were responsible for my bonus this year!

Chris

Yeah and my wife is Chinese :finger:
