Correct mdi-cable for the SWING radio?

Featured Replies

If.. I dont get any free mdi-cable from my dealer..

Will this cable fit with the SWING-radio? http://cgi.ebay.com/VW-Music-Interface-MDI-USB-Aux-Cable-Flash-Drive-/250826053518?pt=UK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL&hash=item3a6665d78e

Only Suitable For Vehicles With The Following Head Units:

RCD 310

RCD 510 (Not 1K0035195AA / AB)

RNS 510 (Not 1T0035680)

I read in another post that the Swing is Skoda's version of VW's RCD-310 but I ask anyway :)

Yes, that will work, to allow the connection of a USB device via MDI emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Hi.

i just want to make double sure before i order because im getting some truly ludicrous responses from my local dealer.

can this cable be installed in the swing radio of a brand new fabia ? im talking about this model:

and if the answer is yes, whats the installation procedure ?

i dont have any designated place to place a player in my fabia (as i assume the VWs have?), but im perfectly happy with running a USB cable from the back of the radio to the glove compartment and have it dangling there with a USB thumbdrive connected to it.

will i need to "reprogram" the head unit itself after the cable os connected, or should the USB option just appear in the media menu ?

if i need to reprogram the HU, how do i do that ?

im sorry if im completely off, but i just got an answer from a local installer/dealer that runs completely contrary to what this thread says.

thanks in advance for any assistance.

According the manual for this radio, MDI is supported. You will always get different answers from dealers on what can be retrofitted.

Please check your manual. This function is covered on P9 of the UK manual.

Have you got the actual MDI system though? This is an optional extra, at least on UK vehicles.

So you will need to look for an MDI connection on your car. I'm not fully familiar with the Fabia Mk2, but it will either be in your glovebox, armrest or the centre console.

As wardy says you need to check if you will be getting MDI port installed in your car. In UK only version of fabia that gets the MDI port as standard is the vRS. If you do have the MDI port it is located in a small recess underneath the glove box. Highlighted in pic below

The cable that you have linked to is the correct cable to buy to connect any usb device to the swing radio as long as the MDI port is fitted. I think it is possible to retrofit the MDI port but you will probably need some reprogramming via VCDS.

The MDI port is standard on the new greenline 2 models also, I got the iPod MDI cable, which as it happens I don't need any more, may stick it on eBay!

MDI also standard on the SE plus. Dealer gave me the choice of which cable I wanted, so have the USB one with a 4GB flash drive. Works very well.

Hi All !

Could you please clarify how Swing with MDI displays mp3 files from USB stick?

- Does it show files like track 1, track 2 by default and you need go to menu each time you switch on Swing to change the way files are displayed?

- Or it shows from the beginning mp3 song name/file name info in the comfortable way with no need to go to the menu?
