For anyone who is interested. I managed to program a remote fob to my car (massive thanks to Langers2K for suggesting what model of key I might need). I bought a cheap 2nd hand car fob from eBay and it's working just fine. So now I have the added function of a remote fob - which I never had previously, and I saved my self the money of getting a new drivers door barrel and the time and effort of changing the barrel. I'm quite happy using the remote, and the passenger door lock if the remote stops working at any point. RJ

Apologies for the thread resurrection. My driver's side door lock has failed (barrel spinning). Instead of replacing the lock, I'm thinking of trying to add a remote fob (present key is just a dumb non-remote) and program with VCDS: 2012 1.6.TDI Octy estate, similar to this thread - but wondering if anyone can advise on what type of remote fob I might need? Cheers!
